From The Team
The 5/6 classrooms have been buzzing with creativity (and a little bit of debate!) as we’ve launched into our persuasive podcast projects. Students are learning how to use their voices to convince, inspire and entertain, and we can’t wait to share these masterpieces with our community soon.
In Maths, we’ve been flexing our problem-solving muscles by revising the four operations. From speedy mental strategies to tackling tricky multi-step problems, our mathematicians are sharpening their skills and building confidence.
In Integrated Studies, we’ve made a head start on our Earn and Learn Unit. Students have been learning, in a very practical way, about the cost of living. Students have been given “weekly payments” from their government and contribute to taxes, paying homework insurance, and holding out for their grocery payments. We can’t wait to share what exciting (and creative) plans we have for the future of our Earn and Learn Unit.
It’s been a fun and productive few weeks in 5/6, and we’re keen for all that’s still to come this term!

What We Are Learning
Reminders
Brain Food: Every day, students are given time to eat brain food at approximately 9.40am. This time is crucial for students to get a much-needed break and reenergise. This is a gentle reminder that your child needs to have fruit/vegetables/yogurt to have during this time.
Homework: Students are expected to read for 20 minutes each night, which is due every Friday, and complete their allocated Writing and Maths homework, which is due every fortnight.
Day of Discovery: Year 5s will be attending Scoresby Secondary School to get a taste of what high school will be like. Please check to see if you have paid/given consent for your child to attend. Students will need to bring a morning snack, a drink bottle and wear their school uniform. Students need to arrive at school on time for bus transport and will arrive back at school by 3.00pm.

Hoop Time
On the 22nd of August, many Year 5/6 students were invited to play Hoop Time at Dandenong Basketball Stadium. To start off the day, students arrived at the stadium and unpacked basketballs to go and practise. Scoresby Primary School had six basketball teams competing on the day. At around 10.00am, the Rookies had their first game. The Rookies did not win their game, but tried their best. The second game was held at 11.30am for the Future Stars. This team did not end up winning but the match came very close. At 12.00pm, students had time to rest whilst they watched other schools compete. At 12.30pm, the All Star Boys had their first game and they won in the end. Each team played about four games against other schools throughout the day. The All Star Boys made it into the finals! Everyone tried new techniques and skills, and had an amazing day! Thank you to our coaches and parent helpers for supporting us on the day!

District Athletics
On the 29th of August most of the Year 3/4s and Year 5/6s went to Knox Athletics Track to compete in sprints, long distance running, discus, shot-put, high jump, long jump, triple jump and relays for their age groups. All schools got points for the events they did well in, and the hosts added the points at the end of the day. Scoresby came 2nd out of the 10 schools that were there.
The u/12 girls and u/11 boys absolutely smashed their relay races, both coming 1st. The u/12 boys and girls high jump both came first with Eliza jumping 1.32m, and Jake finishing by jumping 1.23m. Bodhi also came first in the high jump by jumping 1.26m. The last few relay runners didn’t all make it to Division but still put up a fight to get top 4!!! Our students received many other ribbons for other events throughout the day.
Overall, everybody had an amazing time representing Scoresby Primary School! We then got on the bus and drove back to our school and finished off the day by watching a few of our Year 5 students running assembly!!!

Blueback
This term, the Year 5/6s have been reading Blueback. We are reading it to help us learn new reading skills like using descriptions, metaphors and similes. Blueback is written by Tim Winton. Blueback is a heartwarming story about a young boy named Abel, who lives by the ocean in a small town. Abel forms a special friendship with a giant fish called Blueback, a blue groper, who he finds in clear waters. When Abel grows up, he learns about how important it is to protect the sea life and the creatures that live in it. The story shows how Abel’s connection to the sea and Blueback helps him understand the need to care for the natural world around him. It’s a wonderful story of friendship, adventure and the power of nature. We have really enjoyed reading this book together this term!
