New - Children's Book Week

Children's Book Week turns 80 in 2025

Children’s Book Week is The CBCA’s key highlight national event of the year. This year’s celebration will run from Saturday 16 to Saturday 23 August. The 2025 theme is Book an Adventure! The feature artist for the year, Jess McGeachin, has brilliantly captured this adventurous spirit in his artwork, which features a whimsical map filled with imaginary characters. Jess’ illustration invites young readers to embark on fantastical journeys, inspiring them to travel through the worlds that books open up. As an award-winning Australian picture book illustrator, Jess’ work encourages children to imagine, explore, and create their own adventures. 2025 is also a milestone year for us as they celebrate 80 years of Children’s Book Week! For 8 decades, CBCA has been dedicated to inspiring young minds to journey through the countless worlds that books offer. Jess’ imaginative artwork reflects this mission perfectly, encouraging children to set off on adventures through time, lands, and imagination.

Next week classes will read the Shortlisted books and on Friday 22nd August we will have a dress up day to celebrate this year’s theme.

There will be a Book Week Parade in the Marian Centre at 9:15am. We look forward in seeing what the children and teachers come dressed up as!

Updated - Bullying No Way Week

During the week we will be engaging students in meaningful discussions and activities aimed at promoting empathy, understanding and respect for diversity. We encourage families to take this opportunity to have open and honest conversations with your child about the impact of bullying and what they can do if they need support.

Bullying – important conversations to have with your child.

St Mary’s is proud to participate in the Bullying No Way: National week of action – 11 to 15 August 2025. By working collaboratively within our community, we can collectively help reduce bullying. Families play an important role in helping children understand bullying and know how to respond to it.

If your child tells you about things at school, or you observe something in public that involves conflict or bullying, take the opportunity to talk about what bullying is. You can learn more about what defines bullying at bullyingnoway.gov.au.

Questions you could ask:

  • What do you think bullying is?
  • Have you seen it? How did you feel?
  • Have you ever felt scared at school because of bullying?
  • As well as me, who are the other adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?
  • Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?
  • Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?

Remind your child that bullying is never okay and discuss how they can respond safely if they experience or witness it. Encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult and keep seeking support if needed. By promoting open communication, we empower children to stand up against bullying and create a safer environment where everyone can feel that they belong.

Bingo Help Needed

St Mary's Parish are most grateful the wonderful people who have been able to volunteer their time and for their efforts to help keep our Bingo running.

With this help and Bingo having good numbers most weeks over the past three months, this has resulted in the committee being able to pass on $3000 to both the School and the Parish. These donations have been most appreciated and will be put to good use within the school and the Parish.

For these monetary contributions to continue we are calling out for anyone that has some spare time on a Saturday evening and able to help out for a minimum of between 1 - 4 hours to contact Maree on 0438084364.

Foodshare

Recently, St Mary's School has become an agent for Foodshare. We are able to assist with some food items for families in the Mooroopna area. We have prepacked frozen meals that are great for people who are ill. We are also able to provide some food supplies. Each week we receive a selection of groceries, fruits and vegetables. If you need support please reach out to Gary Woodward or Liz Turk via the school office - 5825285.
