Week 5 and 6 in STEAM

The Preps looked at the story of Picnic by John Birmingham and further explored how food is often an important part of special events in our lives. They looked at the design process and created designs for planter tins that they will decorate and plant seeds in.

The Grade Ones and Twos extracted seeds from pumpkins and capsicums. They then looked at the design process and began creating designs for seed packets that they will fill with the seeds that they have collected.

The Grade Threes and Fours participated in an investigation exploring popping candy. They looked at the scientific method and posed questions about popping candy such as “How is it made?” and “What makes it go pop in your mouth?”. They tried some popping candy and watched a short video about the process of making popping candy. They also revisited the design process and began creating a plan for making cookie packaging.

The Grade Fives investigated how popping candy is made, using the scientific method. They asked questions and hypothesised about what causes the reaction that happens when you put it in your mouth. They tried some popping candy and watched a video that detailed its manufacturing process. They explored the design process and began creating design concepts for a food truck business. They also got out in the vegetable garden to weed, water and look after the seedlings they planted a few weeks ago.
