Grade 1 and 2
Literacy
As we work through Term 4 and the count down is on! Our students can reflect upon all the things that they have learnt so far this year! And we are still learning! In Reading this term, we are revising comprehension strategies and the language used within the reading materials. Students have begun by examining different texts. The other aspects of Reading that students have been developing is their knowledge of vocabulary used in a range of texts, focusing on the author’s purpose and messages that they are giving. Students continue to explore the reading strategies of questioning, visualising, summarising, building on prior knowledge and making connections. We have been discussing how characters are feeling in a text using the clues in the words, illustrations and their prior knowledge to infer how a character's feelings can change throughout the text. Students are use the characters, plot events, problem and solution to summarise fiction texts. Lastly, we are also revising persuasive and information texts, identify features and how they are organised.
In Writing this term, we have been focusing on the structure and features of Persuasive and factual text type. Students have had further opportunities to develop their understanding of persuasive and topic research techniques. Our focus has also been on revising the correct structure of the factual text type: sentence structure, paragraphing, punctuation and spelling techniques to assist students create work that is of interest to themselves and for others to read. In writing this term, students continue to create narratives using correct structure and an expanded vocabulary of new verbs and adverbs. In revising our narratives unit, mentor texts have been explored to support development of ideas, word choice, sentence fluency and organisation. We have enjoyed exploring different ideas for writing, crafting well-built sentences and identify how sentences are sequenced. They have been adventurous in using vocabulary such as adverbs, actions verbs, adjectives and nouns to help readers visualise the characters, setting and the events in their narrative.
Numeracy
We have hit the ground running with numeracy this term. Students have been developing their mathematical knowledge by participating in a range of open-ended tasks and numerically based games. We will continue to build students’ knowledge and understanding of fractions, creating maps and using location words to understand the position of objects on maps and to further develop their strategies connected to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
CERES Excursion
On Wednesday 30th October the Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students headed to CERES for an excursion with a focus on Indigenous Perspectives. We were welcomed to CERES with an t we walked in and students were engaged and asked rich connections and their
