Mathematics

We are excited to start term 4 off with a new unit exploring money! We will deep dive into an exciting array of mathematical concepts while continuing to build proficiency in the core capabilities that underpin mathematics: Problem Solving, Understanding, Reasoning, and Fluency, as depicted in our SURF Menu. They will explore counting and ordering small collections of Australian coins and notes according to their value. Learners will be provided with a range of tactile and real-life experiences to enhance their understanding of money, such as recognising coins and sorting them according to value. Following this, students will learn about Location and Number patterns, identifying where something is and how to describe its place relative to other objects. For this unit students will be completing learning experiences from Ochre Education’s high-quality curriculum resources. These are new resources aligned to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 which enact effective teaching practices such as explicit instruction, check for understanding, retrieval and spaced practice. We are excited to introduce these lessons into our classrooms.

Key Vocabulary: money, dollars, notes, expensive, coins, value, cash, cents

How can you support your child’s Mathematics learning at home?

  • Use board games like Monopoly, The Game of Life, or educational apps that teach financial concepts through play.
  • Engage in conversations about everyday money decisions, like grocery shopping or budgeting for a family trip. Involve children in these discussions.
  • Help your child set a savings goal for something they want to buy. Create a visual chart or a savings tracker to monitor their progress.
