Victorian Girl’ Primary School Chess Final Competition: Student Reflections

On Tuesday 15 October Emma Z, Grace N, Karen T, Louisa R and I  were delighted to represent Shelford in the Victorian State inter school chess finals at Korowa.  We each had to play seven rounds and everyone did really well. Shelford came seventh out of the 13 schools that made it to the final, an excellent result with which we were very pleased. I came individual second which was a big surprise and my best result for these tournaments. We all had a really great day and were very grateful for the opportunity to represent Shelford in its final year. Ariana F

We had a great time playing 7 games all of which were fun. We met at Korowa (they were hosting us) and then settled into a big day of strategy, concentration, and pawns, queens, rooks, bishops, and knights. There were some formidable opponents and difficult chess games. We got there because last term we participated in the qualifying games, we came equal third, so we got through to the next level. This time our team came seventh out of the whole state which is pretty impressive considering that this is the last year of Shelford. It was great to meet so many people who play chess and I hope that I will get to participate in more competitions as the years go on. Grace N

Ariana, Emma, Grace, Luisa and I attended the state girls chess finals competition at Korowa. It was tough, containing 7 hard games against 13 girl primary schools. After battling at our best, Shelford proudly placed 7th out of 13 schools. We were all happy to compete as the last participants from Shelford Girls' Grammar. Congratulations to all players and an honourable mention to Ariana who placed 2nd out of the whole competition. It was very fun and we were all very grateful for the opportunity. Karen T

On Tuesday, October 15 we attended the Victorian Primary Schools Chess Championships that was hosted by Korowa Anglican Girls' School. In the competition there were 13 schools and 7 games. After the stress and adrenaline of the games Shelford placed 7th and Ariana made the team feel so proud by placing 2nd overall, an amazingly impressive achievement. The skills displayed from other schools was really strong but the challenge made it fun. We were all so grateful to be part of the last Shelford Junior school chess team. Luisa R
