Exploring SciTech | Year 10s
Article by Alera T. | Year 10
This term, we Year 10s went to SciTech, where fun mixed with science! When we got there, we went to the first place: the planetarium, where we learnt about the stars and saw such an interesting movie about how stars were formed. The planetarium was just so cool; the room was huge and rounded, like we were inside a planet!
There was an opportunity to see the "Explore Yourself" area with a lot of interactive inventions. We were given a lot of free time in this area, which also gave us the opportunity to socialise with the other schools that were also here. We then made our way to the Featured Exhibition called "Destination Mars". The exhibition was the highlight of the day: a huge room decorated with technology and astronomy motifs, which seemed to transport us to space. There were so many exhibits, among them: a life-sized Mars vehicle, a virtual drone, and virtual food-growing stations. We went around on the surface of the Red Planet and experienced the science and technology that would be needed for survival.
The last thing we did was watch a show called "Mystery Hunters." We all sat together in an auditorium and tested our brains to find the truth about things unexplained and unexpected. This show turned the typical "predict, experiment, observe" method on its head with surprising science, intriguing effects and illusions that demonstrated how our senses and our minds sometimes can be undependable tools in our search for the truth.
Overall, it was a memorable experience that we will all never forget. It was enjoyable as we discovered and learnt new things, while also having fun with our friends!
Market Day Year 10
Our Year 10 Small Business and Finance class hosted a vibrant Market Day this term, raising $927.30 to support WA Wildlife and their vital work in caring for and protecting our native animals. The event marked the culmination of the Year 10 students' Business unit, where they applied the key concepts they had learned throughout the term. From planning and budgeting to marketing and sales, students had the opportunity to experience the real-world aspects of running a small business. With plenty of energy and enthusiasm, they set up their stalls, ready to showcase their products to the school community.
The Year 10 students demonstrated impressive salesmanship, engaging with customers, handling transactions, and managing their inventory. Students from Years 5 to 10 joined in as enthusiastic customers, purchasing a range of items, including cookies, tanghulu, cupcakes, fairy floss, candles, sensory toys and plants. The atmosphere was lively, with Christmas music playing in the background, and the sweet aroma of baked goods wafting through the air.
This event allowed the Year 10 students to put their entrepreneurial skills into action while contributing to an important cause. The funds raised will directly support WA Wildlife's conservation efforts. A big thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success!
Girls Empowered by Maths | Curtin University
Eight of our Year 8 girls had the privilege of attending the Maths Empowering Girls Day at Curtin University, an event aimed at highlighting the incredible opportunities in STEM careers, especially those grounded in mathematics. The day began with inspiring talks from women working in STEM fields, showcasing how maths drives innovation in industries such as engineering, research, and mining. Many current students at Curtin shared the interesting and math-inspired research activities that they are currently working on, which involve financial mathematics and physics.
The girls took on exciting challenges, solving maths breakout boxes and creating patterns through hands-on activities like Lego construction, bracelet beading, and design work. They also solved real-world problems involving how maths is used in the exploration and mining of minerals, giving the girls a real-world perspective on its importance. They returned motivated, with new confidence in their ability to pursue careers in STEM.
Whodunnit?
Mrs Erin East | Secondary Science Teacher
In Year 9 Whodunnit class this year students leapt into the world of forensic techniques, exploring various topics from blood splatter analysis, handwriting and forgery investigations, and even the science of entomology.
This term, our class took forensics to a whole new level with hands-on activities that brought the art of solving crimes to life! One of the most entertaining highlights was the opportunity to practice facial reconstruction. Students used their skills to recreate faces from skulls, producing some truly weird and wonderful results, as captured in the photos above. These intriguing faces were a testament to the creativity and precision the students displayed in this challenging exercise.
To cap off the term, the class then faced off in an exhilarating Escape Room experience. Students worked together to solve puzzles, crack codes, and piece together clues, all while testing their forensic and problem-solving skills under pressure.
A huge thank you to all the Year 9s who made this Whodunnit elective so memorable. Your enthusiasm, critical thinking, and teamwork were outstanding throughout the year. We hope you leave the class with a deeper appreciation for forensic science and a taste for solving the most complex mysteries! Here's to another exciting year of discoveries ahead.
