Senior School Big Splash | Friday 25 October
The Year 7-12 students had a splashing good time at their recent Big Splash, transforming the Clarence Aquatic Centre into a vibrant display of red, yellow, blue and green to represent their House colours. There was definitely something in the water, bringing out that Big Splash energy and House spirit!
From hilarious cone-head polo and noodle races to exciting chicken games and duck dive relays, students tested their diving skills, speed, coordination and balance while working together as a team to create unforgettable memories. Well done to everyone who participated, cheered each other on, and helped with the day.

Regional Basketball Tournament
The 5/6 Regional Basketball Tournament was held over the weekend of 26–27 October. This year, we were able to enter three Year 5/6 teams in the event. All teams represented St Mary’s College exceptionally well!
Our Division 2 team finished with only one loss, narrowly missing out on the final. The team displayed great teamwork, coming together to perform when needed and playing some awesome basketball. The highlight of the tournament was Varvara Iusupova (Year 5) scoring the winning goal with only seconds left on the clock, giving the team a one-point victory! Thank you to Mat Gill, who took on the challenging task of coaching for the weekend – it is greatly appreciated.

The College had two Division 3 teams entered. SMC Blue had a great tournament, finishing second overall. Jacob Hayes was the coach of this team, and though he might be a younger coach, he has all the makings of a great coach in the future! He was respected by all players and ably communicated his advice and messages to the players which they took on board. Well done, Jacob. Tania Hayes was the team manager – thank you to Tania for bringing it all together behind the scenes.

Our SMC Green team was placed in a very strong pool and played against some tough teams. The highlight of the tournament for SMC Green was holding on to a narrow lead against a fast-finishing St Brigid’s Hawks – we were victorious by one point! It was pure elation for all players and spectators after some very hard games the day before. The improvement our players showed from the first tap to the last siren was evident, and their enthusiasm and care for one another were lovely to watch. A huge thank you to Emma Grubb (Year 12), who agreed to coach this team. Emma gave up her time during a very full last week of school, with events around the corner and exams looming. All the very best for your coming exams and future, Emma. We all loved having you as the coach of SMC Green. Thank you also to Jane Whitfield, who was the team manager.

Though basketball is a team sport, it’s great to see individual achievements! Congratulations to Adelayde Gill, Amber Richardson, Fox McGregor (Year 6) and Macey Hayes (Year 5) for their top 10 finishes in scoring in their divisions. Their contributions played a significant role in their team’s success. Thank you also to Talia Wighton (Year 9) and Georgia Scharvi (Year 8) who were our referees for the tournament.
It was an honour watching our students compete and represent St Mary’s College so beautifully. We now look forward to cheering for our Year 3/4 teams and Talia in their tournament this coming weekend.
