Around the School Happenings

New - Maths in Grade 1

This week in maths our Grade 1s have been learning how to informally measure and compare mass.

New - 5/6's Go Tree Planting

The 5/6’s went tree planting this morning with Kylie and Emily from the local council as part of the ‘One tree per child’ program.

Although it was cold, the students did a wonderful job digging holes, planting, watering and putting in a stake and guard. We are looking forward to watching their progress as they grow!

New -  Preps inquiry - 'Where Does Food Come From?'

As part of looking at where our food comes from this week in Preps we learnt have learntabout about dairy products. We talked about how butter and whipped cream can be made.

After we did some learning we met a calf and made some butter and also some whipped cream.

New - Learning the Tarantella

Thank you to Nadia from Cavallo Capers, who came to teach us some Italian songs and how to do 'The Tarantella' today!

It was fantastico!

Check out the post on our FB page and the video of the students, which is in the comments.

New - Book Fair Buzz at St Mary's

There was a real buzz of excitement around the school last week as our Book Fair opened its doors! Students were thrilled to browse the colourful displays and chat about their favourite reads. It’s always wonderful to see a love of reading come alive in such a fun and engaging way.

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers — Maree, Nerissa, and some of our student leaders — for their time and effort in organising this special event for our students.

Your hard work made today such a success!

Happy reading, everyone!

Thank you from Maree & Nerissa

BOOK FAIR  was a great success.

A big thank you to all the families who have supported it.  We sold $3,400 worth of books, which means the school Library will receive $1200 worth of books.   This is fantastic, because the school does not have to find this money to keep the library up to date with current books.

Thank you again for the families who supported the day.

Maree and Narissa

New - Italian Cities

This term in Italian, the 3-6 students have been learning about the different Italian cities and all that they have to offer. So far we have explored Milan, Rome and Venice.

Each fortnight, the students make a slide about a city and then do an art/craft activity related to that city. At the end of term, students will present their slideshow to other classes to showcase their learning. Bravo studente

New - Carlton AFLW Visit St Mary's 3/4 students

Last Tuesday we were very lucky to have some Carlton AFLW players, Yasmin Duursmaa, Mimi Hill, Dayna Finn & Mia Austin, visit St Mary's and conduct a footy clinic with the students in Year's 3 and 4.

They spent some time talking about their journey to AFLW and answered some student questions before heading out to the oval for a skills session.

Let's hope we have some budding AFL footballers in our midst that we may see play in the future.

New - Reconciliation Activity

What a week at St Mary's! We have had a wonderful week of learning about this years Reconciliation theme - Bridging from Now to Next. We finished off the week with students creating a footprint walk to share ways they can commit to walking together to push forward as past lessons guide us towards reconciliation.

New - Mass for Healing & Justice

The FIRE Carriers travelled to Benalla today with other FIRE Carriers from Sacred Heart Primary School, Tatura. We attended the Mass for Healing & Justice at St Joseph's Church with other schools from the diocese.

Bishop Shane celebrated Mass, reflecting upon the ongoing need to promote change. It was a beautiful celebration of culture with a smoking ceremony, choir singing with didgeridoo players performing and a procession of various symbols such as a coolamon, gum leaves to represent the land and framed prints of significant elders of the past. I thank our students who represented our school prayerfully and with reverence.

New - Learning About our Church with Preps

In preps recently we have been learning all about our church and the special things we see in our school and church.

Yesterday we went for a walk around the school to see what we could find.

New - Indigenous Culture & Language

Friday 29th May, we had Aunty Cheryl and Uncle Lance teach us about culture and language. We looked at a possum skin cloak, other furs from various animals, echidna quills, kangaroo teeth, long neck turtle shells and emu eggs. We tied emu feathers together and put them inside a gum nut to make a necklace. Aunty Cheryl and Uncle Lance Welcomed us to County in language and performed a smoking ceremony to cleans us and our necklaces. We finished off the session with a morning tea. Thank you to the helpers who supported the students in making the necklaces.

We have prepacked frozen meals that are great for people who are ill. We are also able to provide some food supplies. Each week we receive a selection of groceries, fruits and vegetables.
