Magnify Around the Classrooms

#magnifysandhurst

It has been a busy fortnight in the P-2 area with lots of wonderful learning happening.

Foundation

Last week the Grade Prep children read “The Potato People” and they explored what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story. This week the Grade Prep children are reading “There's a Bear on my Chair”.

Gr 1

Grade One children are studying the picture book, “Josephine Wants to Dance”.  After reading “Josephine wants to dance”, students have written about an activity they love to do or what they imagine doing when they grow up.

We have used the sentence stems:

I really like ... because...

When I grow up I want to be a ....

Students are also exploring sounds that have two letters that make one sound such as ff, ll, ss, zz, ck and sh.

Gr 2

Grade Two children are reading a new story book called “Chooks in Dinner Suits”.  It is based on a true story about Swampy Marsh who used Maremma dogs to guard a penguin colony near Warrnambool to ensure their survival. For Writing, the children will be retelling the story this week following a narrative plan. For Spelling the children are focusing on the “oi” sound in words like coin and “oy” like toy.

Prep

Grade Prep students have been learning how to read and write numbers up to 20. They have also used the strategy of subitizing (understanding a model of a number) for numbers up to 20. They have used unifix blocks to make models of numbers up to 20.

Gr 1

Following the OCHRE program for Maths, Grade Ones are learning to compare containers based on direct comparison of capacity.

Gr 2

Grade Twos are revising 3 and 4 digit numbers. They are also learning to round up numbers to the closest 10, 100 or 1000s.

Gr 3 and 4

We are exploring the storybook "Finding Our Heart. A story about the Uluru Statement for Young Australians" by Thomas Mayo. Vocabulary work has been taken from this text too. Our writing has focused on the format of a Personal Response. We have learned about adverbials and how they provide additional information. We have explored moving adverbials to the front or end of sentences.

For Maths, Gr 3s are learning to recognise and represent unit fractions including 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5 and 1/10 and their multiples in different ways. Students are learning to combine fractions with the same denominator to complete the whole.

Gr 4s are learning to count by multiples of quarters, halves and thirds, including mixed numerals. Students are locating and representing these fractions as numbers on number lines. We've also explored converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa.

Gr 5 and 6

In 5/6, we have started reading our final book for the term, 'Waves' by Donna Rawlins, Heather Potter and Mark Jackson. This book is an 'anthology' and is a narrative non-fiction book about the waves of migration to the shores of Australia. During writing time, we will be focusing on writing a narrative non-fiction story. Our spelling lessons at the moment are focusing on applying the rules to add a suffix to the end of a word. In particular, we are looking at the suffix 'ible' and 'ise'.

In Maths, we are finishing our 'decimals' topic this week, and will be moving onto 'probability' in Week 9, with a focus on describing probabilities and conducting chance experiments.
