Online Gaming as a Learning Tool

Gaming requires strategic thinking, quick decision-making, and collaboration. Games like Minecraft, Portal, and Civilization challenge players to build, experiment, and adapt—skills that translate well into academic and real-world success. Educational games can also reinforce math, history, and language concepts, while narrative-driven games promote empathy and storytelling. Our Senior Silent Minecraft Club continues to thrive every recess in the library with students gathering to build, explore, and collaborate in a peaceful, focused environment. It’s a space where creativity meets calm—a great blend of digital engagement and mindfulness.

While gaming has its benefits, it is however important to be mindful of how much time we spend on devices. Excessive screen time can impact sleep, concentration, and mental health. Technology addiction is a growing concern, especially when gaming begins to replace social interaction or physical activity. The library encourages students to enjoy games in moderation and to stay aware of their digital habits. Parents are advised to set boundaries collaboratively because when teenagers feel respected and understood, they’re more likely to respect the boundaries you set together. Some of our tips include:

  • Involve your teen in setting limits for screen time, gaming, and social media.
  • Use daily or weekly time blocks that balance school, hobbies, rest, and tech.
  • Keep bedrooms screen-free overnight to protect sleep and mental health.
  • Designate family meals and shared spaces as device-free to encourage connection.
  • Frame boundaries around goals: better sleep, improved focus, more time for passions.
  • Ask questions like: “What do you enjoy about this game?” or “How do you feel after long sessions?”
  • Limit gaming until homework and responsibilities are complete.
  • Support sports, art, volunteering, or part-time work to diversify their time and identity.
  • Help them find joy and confidence in non-digital spaces.
  • Teens notice what you do more than what you say. Show balance in your own screen time.
  • Share your own strategies for unwinding without devices.

To celebrate the connection between gaming and literacy, the library is currently hosting an interactive display titled Level Up Your Reading. Students can take part in an online quiz that matches iconic game characters to emoji clues. Complete the quiz and earn a prize—just head to the circulation desk to claim your reward!
