What a busy and exciting few weeks we’ve had in Foundation! Our young learners have been diving into the world of habitats, exploring places like oceans, deserts, and grasslands. Students became curious researchers, selecting a habitat and discovering all the animals that live there, along with interesting facts to share. It’s been a joy watching their enthusiasm grow with every new discovery!
In Mathematics, we’ve been learning all about teen numbers. Through hands-on activities, students are building a strong understanding that, for example, 13 is made of 1 ten and 3 ones. A highlight has been creating fluffy clouds with their chosen teen number and attaching matching raindrops—these are proudly displayed on our windows!
We’ve also continued exploring what good writers do. Our focus has been on having a go, saying the word aloud, listening for the sounds we hear, and writing them down. It’s been amazing to see so many students beginning to edit their own work, asking themselves, "Does it look right?" and "Does it sound right?"
In Reading, we’ve been enjoying Anemone is Not the Enemy by Anna McGregor, using it to build comprehension and vocabulary skills. We also spent some lovely time with our buddy class, working on the important theme of kindness—thinking about how we can be thoughtful and caring towards others.
With just a short time left in Term 2, we are so proud of how far the children have come. It’s been a wonderful learning journey, and we look forward to finishing the term on a high!
On Friday 30th April the Year 1 students had an incursion with the amazing Nick from Discovery Dome. We all headed over the MPR where we were wowed with the inflatable planetarium dome. Inside the dome Nick taught us about how the earth, moon and sun rotate and orbit around each other, making night and day and seasons. He also taught us about the stars and how our sun is a star made up of burning gas. We learned that we have different seasons based on how the earth is spinning on its axis.
This incursion complements our knowledge building unit on ‘Changes are all around us’ where we are exploring the day and night sky, seasons and weather. Students also completed a fun shadow experiment this week exploring how shadows change during the day because the earth is rotating.
Western Bulldogs AFL Clinic - Year 1 & 2 Students
Last Friday was cold and windy, but that wasn’t enough to dampen the spirits of our Year 1 and 2 students who were fortunate enough to participate in an exciting 45-minute AFL clinic run by the Western Bulldogs.
The program introduced our young students to the game of AFL through four engaging stations: goal kicking, marking, agility, and handballing. Each activity was designed to be fun, skill-building, and accessible to all genders and abilities and led by such enthusiastic Western Bulldogs staff, the clinic provided a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their footy skills in a supportive and enjoyable environment.
Engaging in physical activities like the AFL clinic helps our students develop fundamental movement skills, understand the benefits of being active, and learn how to interact positively with others in different situations.
We are grateful to the Western Bulldogs for offering this hour of fun and activity on an otherwise bleak and chilly Melbourne morning.
