Grade 5       STEM UPDATE

It’s been a wonderful and busy term in Grade 5 as we’ve delved into our STEM unit with a strong focus on endangered Australian animals. Students have been working hard to research and learn about a variety of unique and vulnerable species that call Australia

home.

Throughout the term, students have developed their inquiry skills by exploring the habitats, adaptations, and threats facing animals by first looking at the St Kilda Pier Redevelopment. As a cohort we then shifted our focus to research a range of endangered animals native to Australia. Some examples include the Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat, Greater Bilby, Lead beater’s Possum, and the Tree Kangaroo. Our students have not only built their knowledge of animal conservation but have also been exploring how environmental changes and human activity can impact ecosystems.

Through hands-on investigations and critical thinking activities, students have been encouraged to ask big questions and consider solutions for protecting these species in the future. This unit has also provided a meaningful foundation for our Writing lessons.

Students have been using their STEM research to inform a variety of written texts including information reports, persuasive pieces, and explanation texts.

Whether they’re informing readers about an endangered animal, persuading others to take action to protect our environment, or explaining how certain species have adapted to survive, their writing has been purposeful, structured, and deeply connected to their scientific learning.

This integrated approach will culminate in our upcoming STEM Expo, where students will showcase both their research and creative work to highlight the importance of protecting endangered wildlife. We are looking forward to showcasing it to the school community next week.
