Term 2 Week 10
Science in 1T: Exploring Light and Sound
This term in Science, 1T has been busy investigating Light and Sound through hands-on experiments and creative activities.
Investigating Light
We discovered that light travels in a straight line and that when something blocks the light, it creates a shadow. We explored different sources of light and sorted them into God-made and man-made categories. Using torches, we tested a variety of materials to find out which ones were transparent and which were opaque. We also learnt a fascinating fact — the moon doesn’t make its own light; it reflects the light from the sun!
Investigating Sound
We learnt that sound is made when something vibrates (moves back and forth very quickly). These vibrations cause the air around them to move in waves. When those waves reach our ears, they make our eardrums vibrate too — and that’s how we hear!
After watching The Magic of Making Sound (youtube.com), the children were inspired to become sound engineers themselves! The children then thought about how to make sounds that could create a thunderstorm. They enjoyed this so much that they wanted to take it further and design and make their own musical instruments.
First, we created our own harmonicas and had lots of fun playing simple tunes. Then, using recycled materials, the children designed and built their own musical instruments. Today, we had a fantastic time testing them out and making lots of joyful noise!
