Dear Parents and Caregivers
The Scandalous Grace of God: A Reflection on Ephesians 3
Ephesians 3 offers a message that was both shocking and liberating in its time - and remains deeply transformative today. Paul reveals the resolution of a long-standing mystery: How would God fulfill His promise to bless all nations? (see Genesis 12:3, 26:4).
The answer is found in Jesus Christ.
In verses 1–13, Paul explains that Gentiles-non-Jews - are now full heirs of God’s salvation promises. This was not achieved through religious performance or ethnic privilege, but through grace alone, offered freely in Christ. The Gentiles did not have to earn this or adopt Jewish customs - it was a gift from God.
This message was deeply offensive to many Jews of the time. For centuries, Jewish identity had been shaped by obedience to the Law - dietary rules, ritual purity, circumcision, Sabbath observance, and temple sacrifices. These practices were seen as essential to righteousness. Yet Paul boldly proclaims that salvation is not earned by works, nor is it entitled by heritage. It is a gift, received by faith.
Imagine the relief and joy of the Gentiles hearing this for the first time: You are welcome. You are included. You are loved - without needing to become Jewish first.
Paul then turns to prayer in verses 14–21, asking that believers - Jew and Gentile alike - be strengthened in their inner being through the Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in their hearts through faith. He prays that they may “grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” and “be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
This is the heart of the gospel: God’s grace is scandalously generous, and His love is immeasurably vast. It breaks down barriers, heals divisions, and invites every person into a life of purpose, peace, and belonging.
Let us, as a school community, be rooted in this truth. May we raise children who know they are loved by God - not because of what they do, but because of who He is.
