Year 1

Reflections on Term 2

What a fantastic term we have had in Year 1! With a big focus on our STEAM project we learned about the wonderful world of minibeasts. We studied their features, the different types (such as arachnids and molluscs) and the ways they survive in nature. 

We started the term with an exciting incursion all about minibeasts where we met beautiful butterflies and felt the exoskeleton of a stick insect. Next we jumped on the buses, along with our Year 2 friends, to visit the Melbourne Museum. Here we looked at a wide range of bugs through the Bugs Alive exhibition and watched a movie in 3D called Marvellous Minibeasts at the IMAX. With all of this in mind, we wandered through Cheltenham Park to gather inspiration for our own Minibeast Motels. 

Our STEAM project challenge was to take all of the knowledge we had gathered and use it to design and build a Minibeast Motel that would attract our chosen minibeasts. We worked in small groups with the Year 2s and although we faced some challenges, we created some incredible homes. These will be on display at out STEAM EXPO on Wednesday 2nd July from 8:30-9:15am. We are all so excited to show off all of our hard work. 

A look ahead in Term 3

Looking forward, we will be focusing on our new Inquiry unit of Tell me a story. This will focus on stories from the past such as fairy tales and Dreamtime stories and will flow through to our literacy unit. Students will use the stories they explore to identify key features of a narrative and draw inspiration to write their own fractured fairytales. 

In Mathematics, students will have the opportunity to consolidate their understanding of Place Value as well as Addition and Subtraction. They will then move into exploring division through the idea of a 'fair share'. Students will measure the capacity of a variety of objects and explore the features of 3D objects.
