Exploring Our Future: Year 10 Careers Excursions
Throughout May, Year 10 students at MECS had the exciting opportunity to explore their future pathways by visiting Australian Catholic University (ACU), Monash University, and Box Hill TAFE. These excursions were part of our Careers curriculum and aimed to give students a clearer understanding of what university and TAFE life is like—and to inspire us to think about our own futures beyond Year 12.
A Glimpse into Campus Life
Each visit offered a unique experience. At ACU and Monash, students explored the academic side of university life, learning about the wide range of courses available and what it’s like to study in a more formal, lecture-based environment. In contrast, Box Hill TAFE provided a more hands-on and relaxed atmosphere, showcasing practical courses in trades, beauty, mechanics, and more.
These excursions helped bridge the gap between school and the real world. They made the idea of further study feel less overwhelming and more achievable, while also helping students connect their current learning to real-life careers.

Student Reflections
Our personal favourite was the beauty course at Box Hill because they had heaps of classroom space and hair salons to work in. It was cool that it was open to the public and that the students had an opportunity to see what it was like to serve ‘real’ customers.
Talitha & Jubilee
I really enjoyed the automotive section at Box Hill TAFE. I saw the first Honda Type R on display, which was inspiring. I’m interested in the Mechanics Program and want to pursue a career or hobby in cars.
Jordan
Jordan also shared his interest in Arboriculture, a course that involves working outdoors and climbing trees—an appealing option for those who enjoy variety and physical activity in their work.
Why These Visits Matter
These excursions weren’t just fun—they were impactful. Research shows that:
- 88% of students felt more confident about their future after visiting a university or TAFE.
- Students showed a 20% boost in self-belief about pursuing further study.
- 75% of Year 10s felt more certain about which subjects to choose in Years 11 and 12.
- Students from challenging backgrounds experienced a 17% rise in confidence after campus visits.
By seeing real campuses and talking to real students and staff, we gained a better understanding of the many pathways available after school—whether academic, vocational, or a mix of both.
Conclusion
The Year 10 Careers excursions were more than just a day out—they were a step toward our futures. They helped us see that success doesn’t look the same for everyone, and that there are many different ways to get where we want to go. Whether it’s university, TAFE, or something in between, we now feel more equipped, more inspired, and more confident to take the next steps in our journey.
