TERM 2 ART AWARDS

GRADE 6

This term in Art, Grade 6 students explored Organisation Line Drawing techniques. Famous artists like Pablo Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci created striking line art. In many cases the works are viewed as ‘studies' or precursors to the masterpieces which are eventually created.  Organisational line exercises are designed to teach the brain, eyes and hands to work together. Throughout a series of lessons students constructed straight lines and ellipses to represent two-dimensional and three-dimensional portions of various objects. The skills learnt guided students to choose an object for their final project. An object that they believed they could make a true attempt at creating three different perspectives. Congratulations to our award recipient Lee for his courage to attempt the human hand, his ability to draw expressive lines is commendable. A special mention is also needed to acknowledge the work of Maddi H and Lacee who followed the design brief of using proportionally planned lines to support the development of more detailed and realistically drawn shells.

GRADE 5

This term in Art, Grade 5 students explored the concept of perspective drawing. Architect Filippo Brunelleschi is considered to be the father of perspective drawing, while Raphael established himself as the master of perspective with his famous “School of Athens” fresco in the Vatican. After a series of structured one-point and two-point drawing technique lessons students were able to use the skills learnt to create their own perspective masterpiece. Congratulations to Emmanuel for his ability to incorporate the game of Jenga into a well-planned composition using two-point perspective techniques. Special mentions go to Amy for her use of space to create a planned composition that utilised various one-point perspective points, Tom for taking on the challenge of experimenting with more complicated forms and finally Lulu who also managed to add her own unique inclusions to the perspective drawing task.

Also, this term the Grade 6 students engaged in learning about the Sandhurst MacKillop Art Exhibition.  Students were required to study the Sandhurst Diocesan theme for 2025 – Pilgrams of Hope. They approached this task with an inquiry mindset, which provided students with a real-life opportunity to experience ‘what it means to be an artist.’ In the past, we would select 5 pieces of work to enter the Spiritual category of the exhibition which was held in November at the Cathedral. Unfortunately, this event will not be taking place this year, so we have decided to hold our own exhibition during Parent Learning Conversations in Term 3. While all Grade 6 student work will be on display, there will be a finalist group, and we would really appreciate your time to be part of the award-winning process. We will be giving our three people’s choice awards: Teacher, Student and Parent. Winners will be announced on the assembly week following Learning Conversations.

FOUNDATION EXCURSION

On Tuesday this week our Foundation students took off on their first school excursion.

This term we have been learning lots about how to care for God's World and about creating Healthy and Unhealthy environments. With this in mind, we ventured out to St Francis of the Fields Primary School to take part in some tree planting.

We planted over 150 small native trees and shrubs to improve the environment at St Francis and create a beautiful meeting space in their Environmental Block.

While we were there, we were lucky enough to meet their Grade 5 students who assisted us with the tree planting and gave us a tour of their farm space to see their cows, sheep and alpaca.

We thank St. Francis for allowing us to visit them and the warm welcome we received. We also thank Lu-Wei at the Bendigo Council for donating the majority of the plants we were able to plant.

Our Foundation students should be super proud of the way they participated and behaved on our trip. They were absolutely wonderful!

WHOLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM DAY - CELEBRATING NAIDOC WEEK

On Wednesday 2nd July, Holy Rosary will host a special Whole School Curriculum Day in celebration of NAIDOC Week, centered on the theme “The Next Generation – Strength, Vision, Legacy.” This year, we are proud to highlight the leadership of our Grade 6 students, who will guide multi-age groups through a day of rich cultural learning and connection.

Students will participate in a variety of engaging activities including music, art, natural craft, and traditional games, all designed to honour and explore the depth and beauty of First Nations culture. The leadership of our senior students reflects the school’s focus on developing the “Leaders of Tomorrow” as they step into roles that celebrate their voice, responsibility, and potential.

We warmly invite all parents and carers to join us on the oval from 2:45pm for a showcase celebration, where students will share highlights of their learning and experiences from the day. It promises to be a vibrant and meaningful event for our whole school community.

Let’s come together to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples—and the leaders of tomorrow who will carry that legacy forward in our community.
