Sport Update

What a busy Term 2 of SJRC Sport it has been. Thank you to all parents who have supported their children's sporting pursuits, whether in SIS or Sports Academy activities.
SIS SWIMMING
It was very pleasing to see our SIS Swimming Squad put their abilities to the test in Week 1 of Term 2. The SIS Swimming Carnival was held at MSAC, providing a wonderful experience for our SJRC Swimming Squad to compete.
A special mention to Julia T Year 7, who made it through to State and represented the SIS in the Victorian Schools Association Competition in Freestyle. An outstanding individual performance.
SIS CROSS COUNTRY
On Tuesday, 27 May, in rather wet and windy conditions, 44 St John's students with great endurance braved the elements at the SIS Cross Country Carnival. I am happy to report that all students gave their best efforts, including some State and National Runners from other SIS Schools.
We achieved some Top 10 Finishes out of 100 competitors per age group, with two of our students being presented with medals on the medal dais.
Congratulations to the following students for their 3 km efforts:

Lastly, to Martin M SJRC Under 15 Boys Representative, we are proud to have you as one of SJRC’s athletes. Martin finished second in his division with a time of 10:42 min. Martin received a silver medal.
Our School Captain Kelemon in a time of 9:29 min finished in first place for the Open Boys to round out a stellar performance. A true ambassador of the St Johns Regional College.
SJRC BASKETBALL ACADEMY
On Thursday, 22 May, our SJRC Basketball Academy competed in the inaugural VBA All Schools’ Tournament, which pitted our college against established Basketball Schools in Melbourne.
Our SJRC Basketball Director of Coaching, Mr Rick Vos, gave a stern warning to our Intermediate Squads that the competition would be of an extremely high standard and not to be overwhelmed. This proved to be the case.
Our Intermediate Boys got off to a very competitive start against the well-established Berwick Basketball Academy and were right in the game at half time. However, the experience of Berwick showed out in the 2nd Half, and the boys went down 34-19. The Intermediate Boys then went up against the highly credentialed Wesley College, only to lose 59-25. However, this demonstrated that within the ranks of our Basketball Academy, there is some great talent with the likes of Brett L, Loong S and Blake J. Both boys play Representative Basketball and have been great student leaders of the Basketball Academy in its first year.
The Intermediate Boys had a dominant win against Lilydale High School 46-15. The Intermediate Boys will gain a lot from being exposed to such a high-level school basketball tournament.
Our Intermediate Girls hit the court also on May 22 and demonstrated that they were going to be hard to beat with the likes of Nyawichar M dazzling the court with her ball craft and shooting prowess. In what was an awesome first tournament for our Intermediate Girls the results were;
St Johns Basketball Academy 26 d Lilydale Secondary College (B) 9 |
St Johns Basketball Academy 18 d Berwick Secondary College 15 |
St Johns Basketball Academy 18 d Lilydale Secondary College (W) 16 |
Our Intermediate Girls qualified for the Grand Final of this section, however, went down to McKinnon College 23-14. However, this once again demonstrates that, with continual effort in Academy Training, the Intermediate girls have a great future, and it may be that they have qualified for the next stage of the VBA All Schools in the Girls Section. We are awaiting a potential Wild Card.
