Kalender Advent Hari Natal
Year 7 students ended the year researching and comparing Christmas in Indonesia and here. They looked up how Indonesians celebrate Christmas and what activities they do, including special celebration foods. They compared and discussed the similarities and differences between Indonesian and Australian Christmas and created Venn diagrams to reflect this information. Students also created Indonesian advent calendars, cards and decorations.
“I was surprised to learn that there are actually more Indonesians who celebrate Christmas than here in Australia because there are lots of people in Indonesia”, Brooke R, Y7.
“It was really fun learning how Indonesians celebrate Christmas, and all the special Indonesian foods”, Alli, Y7
“We enjoyed creating our own activities and decorations for our class Advent Calendar”, Daniel H, Y7.
Christmas Cards for Nursing Home Residents
Year 7 Indonesian students also created Christmas cards for local nursing home residents. Students wrote encouraging notes and simple stories to brighten the residents so that they do not feel lonely. They also included Indonesian greetings and decorations.
“We were so happy to make these cards for the nursing home residents who will not be spending Christmas with their families. It feels good if we can make someone happy”, Katty P and Marina N.
“We feel good making cards and writing well wishes for people who will not spend Christmas at home, and hope they’ll like our cards”, Ava A and Zoe R.
Student teaching visit to Marlborough PS
Recently, a number of Year 7 and 8 Indonesian students visited Marlborough PS to teach Indonesian language and culture to the primary school students. They taught them Indonesian food, fruits and numbers, playing games and bingo with the little kids. Besides providing our students with engaging opportunities to apply their Indonesian language skills, this visit also fosters close collaboration between primary and high school students, including enabling smooth transition from primary to secondary schools.
“We had so much fun teaching and working with the primary school students”, Cristian and Max, Y7.
“I had so much fun teaching the little students. I think I want to be a teacher one day!” Will, Y7.
“Working with the primary school students is such a good experience, we should do this more often. Teaching them really help me remember my language”, Ava, Y7.
