Welcome to an Exciting Year in Grade 5/6!

Welcome to the first newsletter of the year for our Grade 5/6 cohort! We are thrilled to kick off what promises to be an incredible year filled with growth, learning, and exciting experiences. The students have made a fantastic start, diving into the new school year with enthusiasm and positivity. Over the past two weeks, we have been focusing on building strong foundations for a successful year ahead through the Ready to Learn program and engaging in activities to get to know one another.

Ready to Learn Program

The past two weeks have been all about setting expectations and creating a positive and productive classroom environment. Through fun and interactive activities, students have begun to establish personal profiles, connect with their peers, and develop a strong sense of belonging in their new classrooms. It’s been wonderful to see the students engaging so wholeheartedly as they lay the groundwork for a great year.

Zones of Regulation

We revisited the concept of the Zones of Regulation, where students explored various emotions and reflected on personal experiences tied to each zone. Activities encouraged them to identify and express their feelings, equipping them with tools to better manage their emotions. These discussions have helped students understand that all emotions are valid and how to navigate through them in a healthy way.

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

A highlight for many students was learning about the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Together, we watched engaging videos, sorted statements into categories, and created inspiring posters to reinforce the idea that challenges help us grow. Students even came up with their own acronyms to serve as reminders to stay positive and persistent.

The Learning Pit

We introduced students to the concept of the Learning Pit, a metaphor for the ups and downs of tackling new challenges. Discussions centered on the importance of mistakes and how they are stepping stones to success. Students created their own learning pits, complete with speech bubbles illustrating the thoughts and feelings they might experience at different stages. These reflections included examples of past challenges or goals they hope to achieve, sparking meaningful conversations about perseverance and resilience.
