Engaging With Your Child's Report

With Semester 1 reports now released, here are a few ways to turn the document into a meaningful conversation with your child.

Start with the learner, not the marks. Before discussing results, ask how they feel the semester went - which subjects they enjoyed, where they grew, what surprised them. Celebrate genuine effort first, rather than leading with the lowest grade or descriptor.

The marks tell you what your child achieved; the learning behaviours - using class time well, completing homework, striving for their best - tell you how they go about it. These habits are often the strongest predictors of long-term success, and they're the things your child can most directly control.

The house mentor's comment captures your child across the whole of school life, read the pastoral comment together. Any areas for growth are framed as encouragement - a concrete next step, not a criticism.

Ask questions, try: "What's one thing here you're proud of?" or "If you could improve one thing next semester, what would it be - and what support would help?" The goal isn't to extract promises, but to help your child understand themselves as a learner.

Above all, keep perspective. One report doesn't define a child. It's a snapshot of one moment in a long journey - a conversation, not a conclusion. If you'd like to discuss your child's report, please reach out via their classroom teacher or house mentor.

This semester has asked a great deal of our students, and time to rest, recharge and simply enjoy being together as a family is just as valuable as any lesson. We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the semester ahead.
