We are pleased to share important information from the NSW Education Standards Authority about how parents and carers can support their children’s learning in PDHPE from Kindergarten through Year 6.
In the early years (K–2), students develop fundamental movement skills through physical activities and games, which support brain function, physical performance, and academic growth. They also learn interpersonal skills to communicate respectfully and how to stay safe both offline and online. Personal Development is a key focus, helping children build resilience, express their feelings, develop vocabulary to manage thoughts, and make responsible choices in everyday situations.
In Years 3–6, children build on these foundations by applying movement strategies and teamwork in sport and games, enhancing their understanding of respectful relationships and safety—including digital citizenship. The Personal Development aspect becomes even more important as students learn to communicate effectively using health-related vocabulary, explore the cultural significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games, and discuss health, wellbeing, and growth. They gain skills in emotional wellbeing, managing relationships, and making safe choices across various contexts.
At home, parents and carers can support learning by allocating time for movement and outdoor activities, playing physical and cooperative games, encouraging reading and discussions about health and wellbeing, fostering friendships, modelling respectful interactions, and assisting children to develop independence and responsibility. Personal Development is supported when families encourage open conversations about thoughts and feelings, model resilience, provide age-appropriate guidance about personal growth and hygiene, and help manage screen time and online safety.
