Auslan Report

Grade Prep
In the last lesson of Term 2, Grade Preps will do a revision lesson which will focus on practising poems, greetings and revisiting their favourite topic. They will practise a poem called ‘When I meet a Deaf Person’. Students will revise meetings and greetings in pairs and will practise signing ‘Hello, how are you?’ by using eye contact and giving a smile. During the revision and free sign time, students will select a topic that they enjoyed learning during the term and continue practising the signs with a partner. Some of these topics could include Sea Animals or Feelings.
Grade 1
In the last two weeks of Term 2, Grade 1’s will learn the topic Constructed Action (Role shift) and do a revision lesson. When learning about Constructed Action, students will practise starting a conversation between two people. The conversation will include greeting signs and response signs, for example, hello, good morning, how are you and how are you feeling? One student will ask the question and the other student will respond with - good, happy, sad, tired etc. The activity will continue with the student asking the questions, role shifting into the person responding and the other student will have a turn asking the same questions.
In the revision lesson Grade 1’s will create their own ‘My Story’ where they will provide some information about themselves in Auslan by fingerspelling their name, telling their age, who is in their family and what pets or hobbies/sports they have. After students create their own ‘My Story’, they will share it with their teacher and peers in Auslan.
Grades 2-6
In the last two weeks of Term 2, Grades 2-6 will learn the topic Acknowledgement of Country and do a revision lesson. When learning about Acknowledgement of Country students will
watch a video, discuss and practice the Acknowledgement of Country together. Grades 2-6 will work with a partner to discuss the video and which signs were seen.
In the revision lesson students will watch a video on the presenters showing their talents. They will see Elvin doing a dance/performance, Ben playing cricket and Daniel showing his painting. The teacher and students will discuss their talents and list the signs needed for their discussion. Some talent examples are playing sports (basketball, football) camping, cooking, reading and writing maths. Students will practise an Auslan clause about their ‘talent’ to share with the class or a partner. For words they do not know and want to share, they can fingerspell that particular word to represent their talent.
Well done to all our students learning Auslan this term! Keep updated on learning Auslan each fortnight in our Partners in Learning Newsletter during Term 3.
