Holes - Junior Production

The College's Junior Production of Holes by Louis Sachar was performed at our Bentleigh East campus.

Our dedicated cast and crew starred St Bede's College students across Years 7 to 9 and students from OLSH, all who rehearsed and prepared for 15 weeks to bring three special live shows to captivated audiences.

Junior Production Coordinator, Ms Rachel Urquhart is extremely proud of all the student effort.

"The play Holes is a complex story, a true English and Drama teacher's dream! With subtext, subtle foreshadowing, lizards and poetic retribution, this production truly has it all.

Many of the characters are seeking redemption or trying to make amends for their past mistakes, even in the face of insurmountable odds and what Holes teaches us is that people can change and sometimes a walk in the desert and a journey with a friend is all we need.

I’m tremendously proud of the students who have worked on this show and taken on the challenge of creating a dry barren lake in a few short months. They are a talented bunch with great enthusiasm and energy abundantly overflowing in each rehearsal and performance. It’s been a pleasure to work with each and every student.

Our Senior students stepped up to direct scenes. Stage manage, produce lighting sound and even compose the music. It was a fantastic show of the creative arts talent and skill.

A big thank you from the cast and crew to all the staff for their help backstage, costumes, props and support of putting together our performance. It truly takes a village!"

Sporting Achievement

Congratulations to Aidan Donnelly (Year 7) who competed in the Australian Junior Squash Championships and was part of the Victorian team that won the Australian title.

It was the first time that Victoria has won the title since 1989!  Aidan also performed very well in the Individual competition, coming 11th in the U13 open division.

Well done Aidan!

Year 7 Ethics Olympiad Training

In a day of intellectual exploration, a group of Year 7 students visited St. Leonard's College Brighton, for an unforgettable experience on the importance of ethics and leadership in today's world. The event offered students a rare chance to expand their horizons, fostering a culture of respectful ethical reflection.

The event's keynote address by Brendan Schwab, Executive Director of the World Players Association, highlighted the global responsibility of the sports world in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Students were encouraged to think critically about the ethical dimensions of this crisis and to reflect on their role as future leaders in promoting peace and unity through sports. Schwab's message resonated deeply, inspiring these students to consider the moral complexities of our interconnected world.

Students also participated in an Ethics Olympiad training day against eight schools. They were organised into teams, tasked with analysing, and discussing ethical scenarios. This hands-on experience encouraged students to think critically, engage in meaningful debate, and develop their ethical reasoning skills. It was a valuable opportunity for them to navigate real-world ethical challenges and to better understand the importance of ethical decision-making in their lives.

Astronomic Experience

Fifteen of our high performers in Years 7 to 9 Science at our Bentleigh East Campus were selected to attend the Australian Cyber Conference. They had the privilege of listening to former astronaut Chris Hadfield’s keynote address, as well as meeting and greeting with the man himself.

Chris Hadfield’s speech was an inspiring autobiography of his journey to becoming an astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency, and his time on the International Space Station. He highlighted the difficult journey that it takes to become an astronaut, but also affirmed that perseverance and hard work makes the journey so rewarding.

Many thanks to Clare O’Neil, Federal MP for Hotham who invited us to attend this event, and also the Australian Information Security Association (AISA) for opening up the event for school groups to attend.

College Community Environment

Reusable Food Carriers

It's great to see so many students and staff bringing in reusable items such as coffee cups, lunchboxes and water bottles.  Every little bit helps us on our mission to be more sustainable!

Most notably, we congratulate students on the increase of reusable drink bottles which are being refilled, rather than single use plastic bottles. Every day, around 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans so it is important that we reduce, reuse and recycle.

Don't forget to get your Beda Keep Cup from the Senior Canteen for just $8.

Protect & Preserve Kingston Working Bees

The City of Kingston is running a series of Working Bees to protect and preserve Kingston's open spaces, bushland, and foreshore reserves on Sunday 29 October.

You'll pick up some great skills and learn about our beautiful environment. Activities on the day can range from litter collection and hand weeding through to revegetation of Indigenous plant species.

All are welcome to join, simply register your interest!
