Year 10 Drama

Year 10 Performance Night was held on November 1st, 2023, and showcased the amazing talent in year 10. Along with the incredible dance and music performances, the night served mostly as a chance for Year 10 Drama class to perform their pieces based on social media and the effects it has (positive and negative) on our lives. A wide range of themes were explored, from online mums’ groups to stalkers and the deceiving nature of social media, all with the intention of implementing the dramatic elements (climax, conflict, mood, contrast, space, rhythm, sound and tension) that we’ve been studying all term.

Year 10 Drama Excursion

On Wednesday the 10th, the year 10 drama class went to see Moulin Rouge at the Regent Theatre in the city. It was a great experience for us all to see the theatre conventions we have been learning about for the last semester applied in a professional setting. It was an excellent celebration of all the hard work we have put into creating performance and learning throughout the semester.

On Wednesday 8th November, the year 10 drama class went on an excursion to the Regent Theatre and what was saw was spectacular. Moulin Rouge. After a good first half the show blew me away in the second. After the opening number being a clear crowd favourite enthusiasm seemed to die down a bit, particularly in the slower scenes. The last scene before the interval, however, was beautifully created with spinning sets, soft glowing lights, and acrobatics. A Parisian night of true love was present. After interval was when the show became serious, the tension drew the crowd in for explosions of singing and passion and the fun atmosphere of a nightclub left and only the underworld remained. And still after the tragic end, Moulin Rouge managed to have it's colourful ending with the whole cast – as befitting any stage show – without jarring an audience presented with sorrow.

Coming as a drama class added to this experience, we had the chance to talk about the performance: the lights and sets that were the most brilliant and adaptive – shocking the senses, the dramatic moods created by changing the sounds and colours of the stage, the tirelessness of a constantly dancing cast. What was often just a class – albeit a class unlike any other – the performance brought to life what it is all about. While some people already might be taking drama seriously and following it in hopes of a career as a group had never been too serious, but watching everyone become enraptured by Moulin Rouge and seeing everyone so engaged when we spoke to a member of the cast afterwards has made me believe this is the perfect inspiration for heading into VCE.

Year 11 Performance Evening- Tuesday 31st October.

Congratulations to our Year 11 Dance, Drama and Music students who performed for family and friends last Tuesday evening. We were treated to a first act of group performances and then the second act was Music solos. A special shout out to Violet Peake and Oliva Hall, Alia Fritschy-O’Connor and Elita Hemley for performing their original compositions! Thank you to our Year level leaders, Kate Nicholls, Marina Habashi & Carolina Truillo for attending, especially at such a busy time of year.

Year 11 Drama - "The Cull"

Our Year 11 Drama Ensemble performance “The Cull” served as a social and political commentary on the systematic negation of marginalised members of contemporary Australia, ominously destroying the contrived pseudo of the typical ‘Australian’. We utilised a variety of popular culture tv programs to serve as a frame in a dystopian world and explored how questionable a stereotype of an Australian is. Am ominous mood of dark foreboding was contrasted with moods of light-hearted fun which we hope both engaged our audience and got them thinking. It was great to share our performance work with our family and friends in our new theatre. Thanks to all who supported us with their attendance.

Vocal Showcase

The second Vocal Showcase of the year was a smashing success, with almost every vocal student at MGC demonstrating what it is they’ve learned over the past semester. Lasting from 6:00pm to 9:00, the students showed off to their friends and families with amazing solos, duets and large group acts. Performing terrifically, the students, all ranged from years 7 to 12 sang a large group song at the end of the night, with high energies and smiles. We’re all so thankful to MGC’s vocal teachers, Ms De Jong, Ms Foster, Ms Corry and Ms Calder for helping to cultivate the student's singing capabilities and for making the night of the Vocal Showcase the best it could be.

Rylands Hawthorn

On October 24th the A'cappella choir (including Ms De Jong and Ms Calder) caught the 75 tram up to Rylands Hawthorn to perform several of the songs we had been working on over the past year. We were greeted very warmly by the residents there as we performed, the acoustics in the room were beautiful! As well as the group songs, we were also very lucky to have several choir members perform a solo, they all did amazingly and this was obvious from the amount of applause. Altogether it was a lovely visit and I am looking forward to our performance at Rylands Kew on November 14!

Congratulations to all students who performed at MGC’s second dance night for the year. It was another wonderful evening of dance that showcased routines from the co-curricular dance program, the Year 9 and 10 dance electives and VCE dance class, including performances of the solos our Year 12 dance class presented as part of their performance exam. All performers did an outstanding job!
