Science Specialist Class

During Term 4, the Year 3/4 students have been working on the properties of materials. They have identified and explored the differences between natural and processed materials. The students have explored different materials, their origins and how this material is used in everyday situations.

We have investigated plastic, how it was created and how it was and is used to produce everyday items for the past 100 hundred years. The students analysed the helpful and harmful effects plastic has on the environment and showed their thoughts in a PMI chart. They also created a plastics pledge to assist with plastic waste reduction and awareness.

I pledge to tell my friends to reduce, reuse and recycle to help save the planet.” – Matilda 3RR

I will try to avoid single use plastics.” – Cattelya 4AR

“I will have rubbish free lunches.” – Jumal 4PL

“I will try my best to recycle plastic products at home by placing items with the recycle sign into the yellow bin.” – Ruby 4OD

Following on from our plastics journey, the students have more recently begun looking at packaging, what is it and how different items are packaged differently. They undertook a design brief to design and make a package which ensures the safe delivery of a biscuit. Each class had to design their packaging and then justify the choices they made with the packaging material.
