Respectful Relationships

Wellbeing - Respectful Relationships

This week, we're sharing an activity from a Year 5/6 Respectful Relationships lesson, that was completed in Year 5 last week. In this task, students were provided with examples of U.N. declarations and conventions and learned about the concept of human rights. Students compared the various human rights priorities and concerns addressed in key UN declarations and conventions. One of the aims of this lesson was for children to recognise that because some groups have been more likely to have their human rights abused, there has been a need to create additional conventions or declarations to try and achieve better treatment for them. You may like to discuss the U.N. declarations and conventions cards with the following prompts:

What kind of a world are these conventions and declarations designed to help us to create?

Why, over time, do you think the various additional conventions about race, women, children, people with disabilities, and sexual orientation and gender identity have been created?

Are there any clues in the sequence with which these conventions have been created about which groups are still more likely than others to experience higher levels of discrimination?

Please remember that this lesson is directed to the upper years, but if you have younger children, you may like to have a broader discussion about how we can create a fair and respectful society and why this is important.
