Great Southern Aboriginal Leadership Conference

It was my great pleasure to attend the Great Southern Aboriginal Leadership Conference on Tuesday.  This unique, two day event brought together indigenous and non-indigenous community members from across the great Southern and beyond.

The aim of the conference, from the organisers, was to weave strength into the fabric of the community and to empower future generations so that we can help them achieve their greatest potential. Now, more than ever, there's an urgent need to channel our individual voices, energies and abilities toward a shared mission; that of creating a better world for our youth.

Aunty Averil Dean welcomed the delegates and the MC for the day was Laurence Riley.  Laurence is the first Assistant Ombudsman, Aboriginal Engagement and Collaboration with Ombudsman Western Australia.  Laurence offered moving and inspiring insights into the work of moving forward, towards reconciliation, together.

One of GSG's emerging youth leaders, Wayahpo Manolis, a Yalari scholar, was invited to question panel members on the Elders panel and asked them about their leadership roles.  It was great to see the young and older members of the community coming together and, as always, our Elders were humble and, clearly, pillars of strength and encouragement in their communities.   Our Yalari Student Support Officer, Ms Georgie Mullins accompanied Wayahpo to the conference.

Remembrance Day Service

Today we remembered the sacrifice of our service personel who have paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy in Australia today.  Our leaders presented the service with a moving rendition of In Flanders Field and the Ode of Remembrance.  Students laid wreaths and we observed a minute's silence.  Thank you to our Bagpipe Teacher, Mr Andy Davis for his rendition of Flowers of the Field and to Mrs Jill Bascombe, Humanities Teacher, for arranging the service.
