Learning in Weeks 7 & 8

Writing

In Writing, the students are going to begin a unit on writing letters. They will be learning about the structure and language features for both formal and informal letters.

Reading

Over the coming weeks, we will continue to share great examples of writing through mentor texts with our focus on Author's Choice.

Maths

In Maths, we are going to continue working on Fractions and Decimals during number sessions. During applied sessions, students will be revisiting Probability where they will carry out experiments involving chance.

Topic and STEAM

During Topic sessions, students will be learning about the different types of resources, demonstrating their understanding by classifying resources as either natural, human or capital. They will be participating in discussions about how resources should be allocated. Students will also learning about different industries so that they can appreciate the importance of different occupations that produce and distribute goods and services.

For the remainder of the year during our STEAM sessions, Grade 6 students will be preparing for their graduation from Primary School, beginning by sharing memories of their time at Spring Gully and collating photos of their experiences. Grade 5 students will be taking part in a short unit on Healthy Eating. They will begin by revisiting the Healthy Eating Pyramid and how it can guide us to make healthy choices with what we eat.

What else is news in 5/6?

Be Awesome Day

The students did an amazing job running their activities for Be Awesome Day, providing students from all year levels with fun experiences to remember. It was also an awesome experience to take part in Spring Gully's first ever Colour Run!

Grade 6 Graduation

We are busily organising the Grade 6 Graduation, with students building their excitement for the event. We are currently thinking about the number of guests that will be present for the evening ceremony in the Hub, as we would like to ensure we have enough space / seating. If you know you have more than 3 people attending this event (other than your Grade 6 child), could you please communicate this with your child’s teacher. In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Manya and numbers will be limited to parents only.

Wheel Talk

One Monday, it was great to welcome back Peter Ogunyemi to Spring Gully to once again share his inspirational life story with the students. Peter was born in Nigeria and contracted Polio at the age of one, resulting in him losing the use of his legs. After coming to Australia to represent Nigeria at the 2000 Paralympic Games in weightlifting, he got his first wheelchair at the age of 26. He then took up playing wheelchair basketball which he was fortunate to travel the world playing for Australia. Peter currently plays Wheelchair AFL for Richmond.

Peter has such a great outlook on life, despite challenges he has faced, and encouraged the students to show respect to all and work hard for what they want. The students had the opportunity to participate in wheelchair races and play wheelchair basketball with Peter. We had such a fun day with Peter - he was AWESOME!

2024 Student Leadership Positions - Repeat Notice

In the coming weeks, we will start considering our 2024 Student Leaders. Students will be provided with plenty of time and guidance when working on their applications. We encourage families to discuss this with their children, to help them build their confidence in applying for this great opportunity. Although, not everyone will be elected in a Student Leadership role next year, the application process helps provide an opportunity to start thinking about what it means to be a leader, developing an understanding of their own personal attributes, developing confidence in public speaking and talking about their positive traits.
