R U OK? Day is Thursday 12th September, 2024. It  is a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, “Are you OK?” and support those struggling with life's ups and downs. Life's ups and downs happen to all of us. So chances are someone you know might be struggling. Your genuine support can make a difference whatever they are facing, big or small. So, don’t wait until someone’s visibly distressed or in crisis. Make a moment meaningful and ask them how they’re really going.

We all experience times of change, some people may be feeling disappointed, stressed, unhappy, frustrated by different circumstances. These are all warranted feelings. As Parents, you may notice changes in your child that are concerning to you. Trust your gut.

You might notice that they:

 Withdraw from family and friends; ( stay in their bedrooms);

  Get angry or upset easily especially with people they care about;

  Cry or become emotional;

  Lose interest in activities and things they usually love;

  They could be eating more than usual, or less.

 If you notice a change or just feel that something’s not quite right with your  friends/children, take the time to have a meaningful conversation.

This week the children will be encouraged to “Be a Good Friend” when they see a friend in the ‘Blue Zone’ . They will be reminded that it is not their job to fix people's problems, or know the best way to help and support someone, however they can listen to what their friend is saying, let them know they care and tell a teacher, or grown up if they are worried about their friend. It is also kind to check in on your friend everyday by asking “Are you Ok?”. Remember to reach out to us at school if you feel you need further assistance. Attached is an article with some tips on having such conversations.

Sometimes these topics can bring up some tough emotions. If you ( or someone in the family)  need extra support, We strongly encourage you to open up with someone you trust, connect with a health professional or access a service like Kids Helpline which is available 24/7 (to both children and parents) on 1800 55 1800 or Lifeline 13 11 14.

Thank you for all you are doing at home to support children and their teachers….

Have a Happy Week.
