From the Classroom
Grade 1 News
Grade 1 students have had a terrific Term 3. Here is a peek into what we have been up to.
Writing: Grade 1 students are really enjoying writing. I have seen a big improvement in their confidence, especially with using dotted thirds. We have focused on writing recounts and the students have been learning to use conjunctions to make their writing more interesting. All Grade 1 students completed a lovely piece of writing about our tree planting day. To celebrate their outstanding efforts, Mrs Kennedy invited the class into the staffroom to sit on the ‘teacher couches’ and she listened to everyone read their writing. Mrs Kimmorley, Mrs Watt and Miss Maskell also joined us. Students were given stickers and it was wonderful to celebrate our success.
Maths: This term, we have continued learning about place value, counting patterns, months of the year, seasons, 3D shapes, time and length. The students have also made terrific progress with their addition and subtraction strategies and have enjoyed Blitz Master challenges. They love racing against the clock to reach the next level! Each week, we complete a problem solving task in our Maths Notebooks. The students look forward to the challenge and have continued to develop their strategies. They have also discovered that there is often more than one solution to a problem.
Reading: Our comprehension skills have continued to develop and students really look forward to our daily big book session. Grade 1’s have shown significant improvement in their questioning skills. During Independent Reading time, they enjoy writing down their thoughts on sticky notes, ready to share during reflection time. We have continued to build on our phonics knowledge and a highlight of our daily reading lesson is completing targeted Mesmer activities.
Theme: This term, our focus has been on the Olympics and we have been busy preparing for our very own Toolamba Primary School Athletics. The students enjoyed learning Olympic facts, following the events and watching Australia win medals. As you can see, it has been a busy and terrific term in Grade 1. I am already looking forward to Term 4 and all the adventures it will bring.
