Grade 4 Community News

Just like that, Term 3 has come to an end! We are all so proud of our students for how much growth, maturity and responsibility they have shown going into our final term as Grade 4 students.

4D - Jessica Manning

My name is Miss Manning, and I started TRPS at the start of this year after graduating from university in December 2023. I moved over from New Zealand where I have lived all my life. I was fortunate enough to be placed in 4D as a classroom teacher where I have been able to form strong bonds with my students and the rest of the grade 4 cohort for the last 3 terms. I have a 5-month-old puppy called Frankie. He is a Miniature Dachshund who I love so much! When I am not at school teaching, I spend a lot of my time exploring what Melbourne has to offer, from the beautiful scenery and big events to the restaurants (I love food!). For the last 3 terms, I have had the best teaching experience at TRPS, and I couldn't be more thankful.

Reading

In reading, we have been reading a book called ‘A Long Walk to Water’. The book provides a compelling look at the real-life experiences of Salva Dut, a Sudanese “Lost Boy,” and Nya, a young girl from a different part of Sudan. It sheds light on the challenges faced in Sudan, including the effects of war, displacement, and the struggle for access to clean water. By reading this book, we have been able to gain insight into the daily lives and struggles of people from different cultures and backgrounds. Our students are able to foster empathy and have a broader understanding of global issues. Salva’s story is one of resilience and perseverance. His journey from a war-torn country to becoming an advocate for clean water is inspiring. This book brings a lot of discussion amongst our grade 4 cohort as it shows how determination and hope can lead to positive change.

Writing

In writing, students have been brainstorming and working collaboratively to add language features to their writing. Last week our focus was on inclusive and emotive language. This week our focus is on modality to indicate how certain something is. It convinces the reader that your opinion is correct as it suggests confidence. Students have been independently drafting an SPO to support their persuasive paragraph by including a topic sentence, supporting details and a concluding sentence, while also including language features that we have been learning about.

Maths

In our maths lessons, students have been learning about Mass. Students have been using scales to measure mass with real life examples. Students have been learning and working their way through the learning pit about converting mass to different units like milligrams, grams, kilograms and tonnes. They have been problem solving, comparing and estimating. This week we continued to learn about mass and then began our topic on capacity which will roll over into term 4. In week 2 of term 4, students will be learning about time. It would be great if parents and families could practise reading the time at home using analogue clocks, and modelling language of telling the time (for example, ‘quarter past’ and ‘quarter to’).

Reminders:

  • Please remember your school hat for recess and lunch. They are required for the whole of Term 4.
