Grade 6 Community News
Hello Grade, 6 Families!
In weeks 9 and 10 we have been wrapping up each of our units in preparation for the end of term. The students have been diving deep into these concepts and enhancing their critical thinking skills.
Reading:
We have finished our Reading Reconsidered Unit on the book Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman. In this unit, students have put their knowledge of the book to the test by analysing the events in the book, how characters react and feel based on the events that transpired, as well as explore many themes that appeared in the book. To support your child at home with their learning, you could ask them the following questions:
- Can you tell me the main events in Boy Overboard?
- How did the book end?
- Who was your favourite character and why?
Writing:
In writing, the students have been working really hard on their letter and email writing. The main focus has been to include formal language in these pieces. In letter writing, the students were encouraged to write a letter about their upcoming graduation, either to sponsors asking for donations or about something they wish to have included at the graduation. In email writing, we have been showing them how to email a teacher properly, since this is a skill they will utilise a lot in their upcoming high school years. Test them out! Ask them to send you an email!
Maths:
In maths, students have been learning about measurement with a focus on perimeter and area. Students have learned how to convert between different units of measurement and have put these skills to the test when solving the perimeter and area of different 2D shapes, as well as compound 2D shapes. To support your child at home with their learning, you could ask them the following questions:
- 45 cm = ? mm
- 67 cm = ? m
- 360 mm = ? m
- 12 km = ? cm
Vocabulary:
During our eating time, we are reading Boy Overboard. Our vocabulary words are selected from the book to help with students' comprehension of the book. These have been are 12 vocabulary words from weeks 9 and 10:
Attendance:
It is crucial that all students are attending school every day so they can work on their learning goals and don’t miss important lessons. It is also important for our students to feel included and a part of the school and being present is one big way to help make this happen. Please book holidays during school holiday periods rather than during the school term to make sure valuable learning time is not missed.
We hope you all have the most amazing holidays, have lots of fun and come back nice and refreshed for term 4!
