Hellenic Culture

Hellenic culture is a vibrant tapestry of history, philosophy, art, and language that has shaped not only our identity but the very foundations of Western civilisation.  From the democratic ideals of ancient Athens to the timeless wisdom of our philosophers, from the beauty of our art to the passion of our music and dance—Hellenic culture continues to inspire generations worldwide.

On Wednesday 4 September, students from Year 9 to Year 12 had the opportunity to take part in a very special event dedicated to Hellenic culture and art!

The Hellenic Arts Gala is a biannual event that brings together Senior school students from the two Victorian based Greek-Orthodox Colleges of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, and in particular St John’s College and Oakleigh Grammar.  This year, Oakleigh Grammar had the honour of hosting this event, following the successful inaugural gala at St John's Collage in 2022.

The events started with blessings by Rev. Father Stavros Kakavas. Students were placed into mixed school groups to attend a series of engaging workshops including Ancient Greek Theatre and Chorus Building, Greek Dancing, Bouzouki Lesson and Collaborative Artwork inspired by Hellenic Arts works.

After the conclusion of the workshops, a shared meal in the Conference Centre served fostering connections and community spirit. The night closed with lots of Greek music and dancing!

Celebrating Hellenic culture strengthens our sense of identity and belonging.  It fosters cross-cultural understanding, promotes global unity, and provides insights into the foundations of Western civilisation.  It teaches all of those with Greek background to be proud of their roots while cultivating respect for other cultures.  And from those with different background embracing this culture enriches appreciation for diverse histories while promoting shared values of community, wisdom, and human connection.
