SAKG Report

In our garden class this week, we studied how to determine if a substance is acidic or alkaline. We learnt about the pH scale and then using red cabbage water as an indicator, we tested lemon juice, orange juice, milk, vinegar, bicarb soda, garlic and washing powder. It was fun to see the purple cabbage water turn different colours! Lemon juice was the most acidic as it turned pink, while washing power was at the other end of the scale and was alkaline and turned a blue-green colour. Bi carb soda turned blue which is neutral. We then went to the garden and tested soil from different garden beds. We need to wait for those results as the soil hadn't settled in the jar before the end of the lesson. We predict most of the garden beds will be neutral to slightly acidic as we learnt most vegetables prefer that environment. We finished the lesson off visiting our friends down at the farm!
