Pink Stumps Day
By Abi Jones, Year 11 Student
Last year I was involved in the 24-hour Pink Stumps walk for McGrath Foundation. For me, it was such an invigorating and rewarding experience as I felt like I was involved firsthand in supporting the Breast Cancer nurses around Orange.
The organisation for the walk highlighted the amazing initiative shown by the Round Square Service Leaders. Sponsor businesses were promoted on a display screen, as well as student laps. On the Friday afternoon, the whole school community was able to get involved, boosting school moral and creating an encouraging environment. Staying up throughout the night proved our dedication towards the event and camping in classrooms with friends was an entertaining and priceless time. Wearing our pops of fluorescent pink in socks, headbands, ribbons, hats, tutus, sunnies, shirts and Hawaiian flower necklaces was uplifting as the pink ribbon is universally recognised as a symbol of breast cancer .
We met passionate guest speaker, Robyn Rindell who races Dragonboats in the local area and listened to her inspiring story, as well as receiving a pump up video from Nedd Brockmann who remotivated us all to push through. On the Saturday morning, us walkers were joined by the school swim team, as part of their training. A school Cricket match was played on the opposite oval creating a welcomed distraction from the repetitive laps. Another highlight was receiving Spilt Milk ice cream from a generous sponsor increasing energy levels and drive to achieve our goal.
Overall, my experience with the Pink Stumps Walk in 2023 was an incredible, exciting and gratifying one. It inspired me to become a Round Square Service Leader this year and I would recommend it over and over again. I cannot wait for this years bigger goals and bigger achievements!!!!!!”
If you are interested in being part of Pink stumps this year, we are looking for all the support we can get for this amazing cause.

IPSHA Conference
Annie Dawson, Sinead McDonnell and Brooke Church recently attended an IPSHA conference in Sydney at Barker college on the Social, Emotional and Motivational needs of gifted learners with Dr Katrina Eddles Hirsch. Dr Eddles Hirsch is a leader in gifted education with extensive experience in the field.
Discussion was had about how the affective characteristics associated with giftedness interact with the school environment. We also heard a lecture explaining the meaning of social context and the types of social-emotional challenges gifted students can face in a typical school environment.
Dr Eddles Hirsch provided information on the types of social coping strategies that gifted students can use to manage their gifted identity and she identified steps schools can take to counteract the development of negative coping strategies used by gifted students.
Evidence-based support strategies and programs were also recommended that address the affective development of gifted students.
