Octavia Community

Year 6

Greetings, Octavia families!

October starts another exciting term in Year 6, & we are happy to celebrate the excellent progress our students are making! This year is all about growth, academically & personally, as our students prepare for their transition to high school. We’ve planned engaging activities that will enhance their learning, build teamwork, & sharpen their critical thinking skills. Here’s to a fantastic term!

Warm regards,

Shae, Ella, & Michele

LITERACY

This term in Year 6, we’re focusing on two key areas in our literacy program. First, students will examine various texts, including media, to enhance their critical analysis skills and help them become informed consumers of information.  We are also exploring the roles and responsibilities of Australia’s three levels of government & fostering an understanding of civic responsibility, community engagement.  Students are learning the  art of debating, and writing effective, persuasive texts.

MATHS

Students will use mathematical modelling to solve practical problems involving rational numbers and percentages, especially in financial contexts. They’ll formulate problems, choose appropriate operations, and interpret their solutions, justifying their choices.

Additionally, we’ll work on converting between common metric units of length, mass, and capacity, using decimal representations relevant to various contexts.

INQUIRY

In Inquiry, we’re exploring the difference between needs and wants. Students will learn to describe these concepts and understand why making choices is essential. This topic will encourage them to think critically about their decisions and the impact those choices have on their lives.

HOMEWORK

Students receive a Literacy/Maths choice sheet where they select three activities from Literacy and three activities from Maths to complete for the week. Other students are given a levelled homework packet. Homework is handed out on Fridays and due to class, the following Friday morning.

Reading daily and MyNumeracy practice are recommended, but no longer required.
