Icarus Community Report
Icarus- Grade 3
As we begin the last term of the year, we’re eager to dive into exciting new lessons and activities with our Grade 3 students. This term will be packed with fun learning experiences, allowing our students to build on what they’ve achieved so far and continue growing in their skills. We’re proud of their hard work and can’t wait to celebrate their progress as they get ready to take on the challenges of Grade 4. Let’s make this term an inspiring and enjoyable journey together, full of discovery and accomplishment.
Teachers: Christina, Ritu, Michelle, Ben & Kartia
Reading
This term in Reading we have been learning about how we can read for enjoyment and critiquing a text. We have been learning about inferences which is were we use the facts from the book and what we see to make a judgement about something a character does or their personality. Also we have been answering tricky questions about the texts we read. As a class, this term we have been reading books by Jeannie Baker, Margaret Wild and Chris Van Allsburg.
Some popular books we enjoy reading during independant reading time are the Weirdo series, Dragon Girls series and books by the author Roald Dahl!
Writing
In writing we have been learning about all the different types of procedural texts. Procedural texts are texts that teach use how to do something. They usually have a equipment/ingredients list and a method. We explored different recipes, followed some how to videos to follow a procedural text and then wrote our own. Some of us wrote recipes and some of us taught each other how to play our favourite games!
Maths
This term in Maths we have been improving our number skills by estimating and subitising. We have also been learning about the capacity of different objects in ml and L.
We also created patterns using numbers and different objects from our Maths equipment. Our friends had to 'crack the code' for our patterns.
INQUIRY
Local Government, Laws and Identity
An inquiry into the role of local government and the services they provide to the community. Students will examine how rules and laws affect them and the importance of laws in society. Students will also explore cultural diversity in their community and how belonging to different groups can shape personal identity.
Some of the questions we have are:
How local governments contribute to community life?
What is the difference between rules and laws and why are they important?
How has my identity been shaped by the groups I belong to?
We started our Inquiry with a visit from a Hume City Councillor, Joseph Haweil. He spoke to the students about the many services Hume City provides, things like playgrounds, soccer pitches, football grounds, sport stadiums and libraries, to name a few. Cr Joseph also told the year 3s that Hume is the largest local council in Victoria!
SEL
In Social and Emotional Learning, students have been working on identifying and sharing various interests that contribute to their identities. They engaged in the "Human Bingo" game to explore the similarities and differences among their classmates, discussing their insights to deepen their understanding. The students enjoyed discovering new things about each other and recognised the importance of respecting individual differences. Additionally, they utilised an identity wheel to express their interests, strengths, preferred learning topics, and the sports they participate in to stay active.
