Welcome to Term 4!
As we head into the final stretch of the year, we are excited for all the learning and fun ahead. This term will be filled with engaging activities, exciting challenges, and opportunities for our Grade 1 learners to grow even more. We are proud of how far our Achille's students have come and look forward to celebrating the end of year and preparing for our transition into grade 2. Let’s work together to make this term a memorable one, full of achievement and joy.
Reading
In Reading this term the students have been exploring many narrative texts to explore the theme of friendship. So far we have used 'Stick and Stone' and 'Wombat Stew', to build our understanding of inferred meaning, and how the use of illustrations can also contribute to meanings in texts.
Writing
In writing, the students have been busy planning and drafting biographies about a buddy in their class making sure to include important facts about them. They even got to interview their buddies and ask them some important questions to include under their subheadings introduction, hobbies, favourite things and cultural celebrations. We looked at biographies as a class including the children's author Julia Donaldson, and zoologist Jane Goodall. The students used the features of these biographies to write simple sentences and create their own biography about Jane Goodall after reading the book "Little People, Big Dreams'. Achilles students were able to apply what they learnt and successfully wrote an autobiography about themselves and their culture.
Maths
In Maths, the students have been learning to use multiplication and division to solve practical problems. They have having fun using different maths resources to make equal groups, sharing an amount into groups and identifying how many items are in each group.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, our community dove into the exciting world of Immersion Centres! We "travelled" to different countries, learning how to say hello in new languages and exploring different cultures through music, dance, and art. The students also learned about traditional clothing. It was a fun and hands-on way for everyone to discover the amazing diversity of our planet, and the kids were so excited to share what they learned each day. Ask your child what their favourite part was!
SEL
In SEL students explored the new building area and learned how to show care for the new garden areas by walking on the pathway and putting rubbish in the bins. Students explored the meaning of right and wrong, good and bad, and the effect our actions have on themselves and other people around them. Achilles students identified ways in which our personal preferences are similar or different from others. They discussed how they should show respect and enjoy the individual differences and interests of classmates whether they are a boy or a girl.
