Providing opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore their world through ‘sensory play’ is crucial to brain development – it helps to build nerve connections in the brain’s pathways. This leads to a child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks and supports cognitive growth, language development, gross motor skills, social interaction and problem solving skills. Sensory play also allows children opportunities for relaxation and provides a calm experience.
The Correa children made bubble foam using an electric mixer. (turns out, it wasn’t so calm!) The children measured 1/4 cup bubble bath, 1cup water and poured it into the mixing bowl. We watched the bubble foam develop as the mixer went faster and faster. The foam was then placed into a big bowls to play with. Next we added colour. The children scooped the foam in their fingers as they played. It was a very popular learning experience!!
