School of Foundations

School of Foundations - Term 3 - Week 9

From the Assistant Principal

“Have you filled a bucket today?”

That’s a question we’ve been putting to our students recently. We’ve been inspired by the picture book, “Have you filled a bucket today?”  You can view the story here: Kidco Storytime Online - Have You Filled a Bucket Today?

This story brings to light the importance, value and impact that respectful actions and words have upon others…and, in turn, ourselves. At St Luke’s, we value and foster acts of kindness and encourage our students to fill others’ buckets. The pride displayed on the faces of our students when they recognise that they have made a positive impact upon others is priceless!

At Assembly on Friday morning, we asked students to reflect upon the week and recall a time when someone had filled their bucket. Likewise, we asked if their bucket had been filled by another person’s acts of kindness.

It was heartwarming to see a sea of hands raise as many students wished to share their positive encounters with others. Each time someone told their “bucket-filling” story, we added a coloured ball to a bucket. This demonstrated how easy it is to “fill someone’s bucket”.

We encourage you to ask your child/ren at home, “Have you filled a bucket today, and has someone filled yours?” As they say, positivity breeds positivity.

As the holidays approach, we wish you an enjoyable final week of term and thank you for your ongoing support. Together, we are committed to shaping faith filled, curious children to become creative contributors and innovative problem solvers for a changing world.

Looking forward to celebrating many special moments and achievements in Term 4!

Religion

Socktober - Catholic Mission

All students in K- 10 in their Religious Education classes are learning about the work that Catholic Mission do here in Australia, and around the world. This year their focus is on Mongolia and the John Bosco Caring Centre.

K-10 students are all registering to participate in SOCKTOBER. Socktober is a program exclusively run by Catholic Mission that raises funds for programs benefiting children around the world.

The majority of our Years 5-10 students have already registered, and in the coming weeks we hope to have as many K-4 students register also.  Students are able to post blogs to their site to raise awareness and donations to help Catholic Mission with their work.

Any K-4 parents wishing to register their child in this event, click here.  Likewise, to know more about SOCKTOBER, visit their site: SOCKTOBER website.

As a school we hope to raise money to support Catholic Mission and the work they do.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about collecting and organising data. We have been able to survey our friends to gather information (data) in the form of a tally, and then use this information to create bar graphs.

English

Our students in Kindergarten have continued to master their story writing skills this term. We have guided them through planning and creating an engaging story filled with imaginary characters and a setting. The students are doing so well writing simple complete sentences and spelling common words.

Science

In Science, students have been learning about the needs of living things. Students had the opportunity to plant bean seeds, water them regularly and observe how they grow into a bean plant.

Dance

This term we have been learning ‘Dance’. Students have been exploring how to move their body according to the beats of a song. If the beat/ rhythm is fast then the movement is faster and if the rhythm is slower, then the movement is slow. We have explored the Macarena, Beat of a Drum, the Hokey Pokey, just to name a few.

Stage 1

Religion

In Religion our students have been exploring oragnisations that serve others. Students explored the word ‘serve’ and what it means to help others wholeheartedly. Students took a deep dive into two organisations; St Vincent de Paul and Meals on Wheels. We explored how the organisations operate, who they are run by and who they serve.

English

In English we have been creating persuasive text using one or more ideas. Students have been exploring ways to convince their audience of their opinions in topics that reflect daily life problems, such as playground rules, school rules and we should /should not have a class pet. Sentence structure and use of conjunctions were explained and students were encouraged to explore how they can make their writing better.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Stage 1 students have been focusing on understanding and managing time in practical ways. They are learning to read analog clocks, tell the time to the quarter hour using terms like ‘past’ and ‘to,’ and measure the duration of events using hours, minutes, and seconds. Additionally, they are using calendars to calculate the time until upcoming events and practicing with simple tools to measure durations.

To deepen their understanding, students made their own clocks, allowing them to see how the clock’s hands move and how to read the time accurately. This hands-on activity reinforced their skills in telling time to the hour and quarter hour. They are also associating the numerals 3, 6, and 9 with 15, 30, and 45 minutes, and linking these with ‘quarter past,’ ‘half past,’ and ‘quarter to.’ This comprehensive approach is building their confidence in reading and understanding time.

Health -Tinmen

In PDH, we have been learning about Gratitude. To acknowledge the things we are thankful for in our lives, we have created a gratitude chain. We have also begun journaling things we are grateful for each day. We have been learning about, and practicing, positive self-talk. We are learning how to turn a negative thought into a positive and applying this to situations that we may face in everyday life. Using positive self-talk makes us more resilient and helps us overcome obstacles we face in our lives. Building resilience allows us to bounce back and solve small problems ourselves.

Stage 2

English - Author Visit

This term, Stage 2 was lucky enough to have had the wonderful opportunity to host author Belinda Murrell! During her engaging visit, Belinda shared captivating stories about her life and the journey that led her to become a beloved children’s author. She spoke about her inspirations, including her family history and her travels, which have all influenced her imaginative storytelling. The students were enthralled as she discussed her popular books and the creative process behind them. This visit not only inspired our young readers to explore their own writing but also sparked a love for storytelling that will last a lifetime!

Mathematics

This week, Stage 2 students have been diving into the exciting world of addition and subtraction! Through a variety of hands-on activities, interactive games, and engaging group discussions, our young mathematicians are developing a solid understanding of these fundamental concepts. They have been using real-world examples to solve problems, reinforcing their skills in a fun and practical way. As they work collaboratively, students are also learning the importance of teamwork and communication in mathematics. We’re proud of their progress and can’t wait to see how they continue to build their confidence in maths!

Religion - Stage 2 Liturgy

As we enter the last few weeks of Term 3, we came together as a community to celebrate our learning in religion through our Stage 2 Liturgy. All of Stage 2 came together with our parents and families, and we shared what we learnt this term. This term in religion, we have been focusing on how we can display the Catholic Values in our everyday lives.

Students this Term in Geography have been working in groups researching and presenting information about a given neighbouring country to Australia. Countries include Indonesia, New Zealand, Tonga and many more. The students will be hosting a gallery walk for all students in SOF to come and view their presentations and learn more about our neighbouring countries. They are very excited to show their hard work.

During the last few weeks in sport Stage 1 has had the opportunity to participate in an AFL Clinic program. Students have been able to learn multiple AFL skills and techniques which enable them to work as a team and use effective eye and hand coordination skills. Year 1 and 2 have enjoyed their time participating in this great opportunity as it has enhanced their abilities to be team players.
