News from the Chicken Coop

We’re back!

Like us, our chickens have also returned from their summer holidays, so a huge thank you to Carmel Barro and her family who took such wonderful care of the girls. We hope they were well behaved and laid lots of eggs. Thanks again Carmel!

Volunteers needed-all weekends, starting this weekend!

Each weekend and over the school term, school families volunteer to go on the chicken duty roster to look after our school chickens. Chicken Duty involves:

  • letting the chooks out of their coop in the mornings,
  • putting them away in the evenings and
  • checking that they have enough water and food each day.

It’s really easy and the kids love it! Duty families get to keep all the yummy eggs they collect over the weekend. An information sheet will be provided with all the details prior to your duty.

Please email Mel at mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au with your preferred dates, if you are interested in being added to the roster. First in, first choice of dates!

Chicken Coop Maintenance - We Need Your Help!

Urgent maintenance work is needed to be done on the chicken coop to keep the nasty fox away from our chickens. We are looking for anyone with building or handyperson skills to help out. The coop door needs repairing and the wire on the enclosure is beginning to rust so it needs replacing/repairing. We will pay for all materials and labour required.

Please email Mel at mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au  or see Verona at the office for more information.

Egg Lotto is returning in 2024

The Environment Leaders will once again run a fortnightly egg lotto. All the money we make is put back into the keeping of the chickens for buying food and other resources. The first Egg Lotto draw for the year will be next Monday 12 February at assembly. There will be several dozen eggs available to win so get your $1 raffle ticket soon. The leaders will be out in front of the school on Wednesday afternoons from 3:10-3:20pm to sell tickets to parents or students.

Thanks for your support,

The Environment Team
