Learning Community 3

5/6 Glenys Howard and Levi Hudson

Welcome back everyone! A special welcome to Mr Hudson who has joined our teaching team and will be teaching the Grade 5/6 class this year.

What a fantastic start to the new year!  Our first unit of work was aimed at establishing the expectations within our classrooms and allowing students to get to know their classmates a little better. This has really helped us all to get off to a good start and set us up for a great year.

Students in the senior team are expected to develop their leadership skills and can do this in a variety of ways. Some students have taken on roles of responsibility that require them to work with staff as well as students in an official capacity such as our School Captains, Positive Behaviour  Support Captains,  Cultural Leaders and House Captains. Others will work with the Prep students as Buddies, or become part of the Junior Red Cross and help to raise money for worthy causes, whilst others will demonstrate their leadership within the yard helping younger students.

This year each student will have the chance to experience what it is like to lead the class in an activity through the Student In Charge (S.I.C) program. Students are encouraged to teach their class something new, or share their knowledge in a half hour session. This is designed to build confidence, public speaking skills and clarity of instruction. In the past students have taught their classmates a dance, a new game, some martial arts skills, origami and art/craft. We can't wait to see what new skills we acquire!

Our work this term will centre around a positive learning environment and acceptance of others. We will also begin learning more about Indigenous Culture and the history of our area.

We would really love to see you all during our up-coming Parent/Teacher conversations. Please book a time if you can.

Thank you.
