Principal's Reports

Jenny Dowsett

Welcome:

Welcome to the 2024 school year. With heat and power outages it has already been an eventful start. A special welcome to new families and to our 25 Prep students who are just starting their learning journey with Bunyip Primary School. We encourage strong and supportive connections with our families and know that when the family and school work together towards the same goals, we have more success and your children do better at school.

There are opportunities to be involved in Parents & Friends, School Council (5 parent vacancies that we are keen to fill) and other events as the year progresses. If you or other family members intend to participate in any school activities (including listening to children read in the classroom), you need to have a Working With Children Check. These are easy to do online. There will also be a Volunteer Induction session next Monday at 9.30am in the Community Room (breakfast Club / P&F room). For people who are unable to make this session, I will be running another session at a later date.

Children’s Voice Project:

This year we have been lucky enough to have been chosen to participate in the Cardinia Communities for Children project. A team from Anglicare who run this project will run sessions for all students in the school in Grade level cohorts. Each group will share a story time and then children will be invited to participate in a discussion to share their thoughts on a ‘Big Question’ posed by the team. Previous questions asked have been ‘What is important to you?’ and ‘What big events have happened in the last few years?’ The children’s responses and art work are then used to create a book. To take part in this project we need each student to have a signed permission form that also requires them to give their consent to have their words and art work used in the finished publication. The sessions will run on the 12th and 13th March, so please return signed forms prior to this date.

Breakfast Club:

Our students love breakfast club and we are currently running it on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, however we have a very small team of parent volunteers involved. To keep breakfast club running and to increase the days it runs, we need more support from our parent community. If you or any grandparents are able to volunteer one morning a week from 8.15 to 9.15am we would love to have your help. Please let the office know if you can help out in this way.

Family BBQ:

Unfortunately we had to cancel the BBQ due to the heat. We will look at setting a new date later in the term. Due to the power outage this week, we were unable to freeze the sausages and therefore the students have had a sausage sizzle lunch. Huge thanks to the parents who were able to organise cooking the sausages so that they didn’t go to waste.

Parent Teacher Chats:

In week 8 of this term we have set aside two afternoons for parents to have 10 minutes to meet their child’s teacher, check in on how your child has settled and discuss any early concerns. Session options are Monday 18th March 2.30 – 5.30pm and Tuesday the 19th March 2.30 – 4.30pm. We encourage all parents / carers to make a time to meet your child’s teacher. Bookings are open now via Compass.

Mobile Phones:

As per the Department policy, students should not have access to their mobile phones whilst at school. The recent policy sent out outlines the expectation that students who have a phone are to bring their phone to the school office where it will be placed in a zip lock bag and then kept in the school safe for the day. Please support the school and remind your child that it’s important to respect the rules and follow the policy.
