Recreation Report

Mr Blair Whitlock

Recreation activities got off to a great start in week one as the boys got straight back into the swing of things. The heavy rain forecasted changed our plans, but everyone was kept busy nonetheless. Friday kicked off with a ‘Know Brisbane Better Tour’ for our new boarders to give them a better understanding of Brisbane’s layout and several key landmarks. We drove down to the river and went for a walk along the beautiful Kangaroo Point Cliffs which is always a highlight. The river is a hive of activity and the boys enjoyed spotting Water Dragons before taking on the near vertical staircase back to the top. After that we drove past Suncorp Stadium on the way to the Mount Coot-Tha Lookout for a better look at the city. It was a cloudy day but the boys got their bearings and eventually figured out north from south! The final stop was a burger lunch at Grill’d in Rosalie before heading back to Marist for a swim.

Meanwhile the returning Years 8 and 9 boarders got stuck into a round of footgolf on the ovals at school. It’s always good fun and a special mention to the Year 8 winners - Caleb, Ryan and Tom and the best dressed team, Anthony, Kila and Peter! It was stinking hot with the humidity and most boys took some time to relax in the dorm during the afternoon before an hour in the gym to round out the day.

Saturday saw Term 1 sport trials take place with boarders taking to the AFL field, cricket pitch and volleyball courts. It’s great to see so many boys having a crack at various sports and making the most of the co-curricular opportunities available. A quick trip down to Brookside for supplies led into another afternoon swim before retiring to the dorms for the evening.

Unfortunately, the lightning and thunder skittled our planned Wet n Wild but we had a plan B ready to go just in case. We afforded the boys a small sleep-in before some basketball and volleyball in the gym. After lunch 30 boys headed over to Morningside for a couple of hours at 1UP Arcade. It’s the largest retro arcade in Brisbane and we heaps of fun cracking into the 180+ games on offer. Meanwhile plenty of the older boys filled the Draney Theatre to watch Top Gun: Maverick with some pizza and soft drink too. We’ve postponed the Wet n Wild trip to next Sunday so hopefully the weather gods play ball this time around.
