Wellbeing

Hi everyone,

I’d like to introduce myself to the BEPS parent community, my name is Katie Abbott and I’ve started at BEPS this year as a Leading Teacher with a focus on Wellbeing and Disability Inclusion. My background as a teacher is varied, having taught as a specialist teacher, an intervention teacher as well as a classroom teacher across the year levels, but for the past five years, my main focus has been Wellbeing and Engagement and Disability Inclusion. I am passionate about the importance and the interrelation of Wellbeing and Learning for positive student outcomes.

A big part of my role at Burwood East will be around the Department of Educations (DE) Disability Inclusion Reform as well as whole-school Wellbeing initiatives to support the new Strategic Plan goals. I’ve been spending my first few weeks here getting to know staff, students and parents and getting a feel for the school. Everyone has been extremely welcoming and supportive and I’m looking forward to getting to know more community members as the year progresses.

I do move about the school quite a bit, but I do also have a classroom space in the main building (Room 32) where we are setting up a Wellbeing space, ensuring that student voice plays a part in what sort of things should be a part of the space to support students.

I’d like to introduce two other new BEPS community members who reside in my classroom- two (a male and a female) spiny leaf stick insects, which some students have been assisting me to look after.

As always, your child’s classroom teacher should be the first port of call if there are any inclusion, wellbeing or engagement issues occurring, but I am here to assist and support with these needs and work collaboratively with the teachers to support your child.
