Performing Arts Program

Dear BEPS Community,

Following a busy start to Term 1, 2024, it is my pleasure to once again welcome all parents and students (new and returning) to the Performing Arts Program. The Performing Arts Program covers both the Music and Drama curriculum, both of which will be taught in equal parts across the year. Throughout the year, your child will attend a 50-minute Performing Arts class with me each week, where we will engage in both the practical and theoretical aspects of the dual areas of Music and Drama.

In the initial weeks of Term 1, the students have already begun developing their compositional skills by creating their own cohort songs. This overarching project ties into Term 1’s concept of “Healthy Communities”, enabling and encouraging students to foster a sense of belonging and connectedness through working together to compose a song that represents themselves as a year level. In completing this project, students will also develop their ability to collaboratively write song lyrics, play the ukulele and sing their cohort songs.

The music program also aims to provide students with a holistic experience that is fun and enjoyable, to inspire and enrich their lives through music and drama. As such, two musical ensembles, the Expert Ukulele ensemble and Rock Band, will be running throughout Term 1, with more to potentially come in following terms. I would strongly encourage your child/ren to join one of the ensembles if they play a relevant instrument! If they are interested in joining either of the ensembles, it is never too late to speak to me about doing so.

Students are also encouraged to think critically about the various forms of media they encounter, including age-appropriate music, television shows, movies, books and online media. This will help them develop essential skills for critical thinking and competency.

I look forward to a continued Term 1 filled with music, fun and collaborative learning experiences.

Kindest regards,

Colin Cheong
