Lent
Lent has certainly come upon us quickly this year. It covers the 40 days leading up to Easter, which is also earlier in the calendar than usual!
We began Lent this year with our staff team coming together for pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, and then a whole school Chapel for Ash Wednesday.
What is Lent? The word “Lent” comes from the Old English word “lengten,” which simply means “spring” — when the days lengthen and new life springs forth. Obviously this is has some origins in the northern hemisphere - as for Australia we are the other way around, and headed towards Autumn!
All the same, it is a time in which we anticipate the victory of the light and life of Christ over the darkness of sin and death. It is, a season of a kind of “happiness and wonder that makes you serious.” (C. S. Lewis).
It is our prayer that as you journey with us from Ash Wednesday to Easter, you would be reminded of the reality of our broken humanity, but as days remain bright and we enjoy a brilliant autumn, that you would also experience with greater abundance the reality of God’s redeeming grace. And so, just as we carefully prepare for big events in our personal lives, Lent invites us to make our hearts ready for remembering Jesus’ death and resurrection at Easter.
God, we give thanks for the opportunity to take time to reflect and grow to be more like you. We praise you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, and his death on the cross and resurrection so that we might enjoy salvation and eternal life with you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
