School Captain Report

Buddies
The Buddy Program, held at the beginning of every school year, is a truly momentous and meaningful occasion that marks the exciting start of the Prep students’ primary school journey. Starting school can feel both exciting and overwhelming for young students, which is why the Buddy Program plays such an important role in helping them feel welcomed, safe, supported, and connected within our school community from their very first days. It creates a warm and caring environment where the younger students are able to build positive relationships and gain confidence as they settle into a brand-new chapter of their lives. By having older role models to guide and encourage them, the younger students quickly begin to feel a sense of belonging and comfort within the school environment.
The preps and Year 5s participate in a range of engaging activities such as a fun treasure hunt and several arts and crafts along with sharing laughs, stories and playtimes. It is beneficial for the preps as it encourages them to make friends and be open to new changes. Having buddies is highly beneficial for the Year 5s because it fosters leadership, empathy, and social-emotional growth, while boosting confidence and responsibility. Our Year 5s have done a wonderful job this year of taking care of our Preps and making sure they have warmed up to Primary School life.
The Buddy Program is especially beneficial for the Prep students as it supports them in adjusting to the changes and challenges that come with starting school. Having an older buddy helps them feel reassured and supported, while also encouraging them to make new friends, try new experiences, and become more confident learners. Knowing that they have a trusted older student to turn to can make a huge difference in helping them feel secure and happy at school.
At the same time, the program is equally rewarding for the Year 5 students. Taking on the responsibility of being a buddy allows them to develop important leadership qualities, empathy, patience, and communication skills. It encourages social and emotional growth while also building their confidence and sense of responsibility as positive role models within the school. Through supporting and guiding their younger buddies, the Year 5 students learn the importance of kindness, inclusion, and community spirit.
Our Year 5 students have done a truly wonderful job this year in caring for their Prep buddies and helping them transition smoothly into primary school life. Their kindness, encouragement, and leadership have made a lasting impact on the younger students and have helped create a welcoming and supportive school environment for everyone involved. The Buddy Program continues to be a valued tradition within our school community, fostering friendships, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging for students of all ages!
We had asked a buddy pair about how they feel regarding the buddy program and how it has made an impact on their lives:
“I feel happy when I’m around my buddy and I like to play and have time with her.”
Savannah PLP
“I think Savannah is very connected to me, and I feel pleased to have a buddy who enjoys spending time with me.” Jaisvi 5CL
